What is social TV?

Simply put, it’s about merging your social media networks to the TV.  It’s making TV social–again. It’s about taking the water cooler effect and making this virtual, it’s about the empowered consumer viewing content when and where they want, deciding who they want to share it with and being able to do this all in real time.In essence it is a term that describes technology that supports communication and social interaction in either the context of watching television, or related to TV content.Viewers are now using social media to connect with the TV with content that matters to them. Then, as the MIT study shows, they are engaging in massive real-time conversations around those shows and learning to be a part of that conversation and it is a participatory culture as well as a personalised one.TV always been social and on the face of it TV and social media seem like a natural fit but if the TV industry is going to make the most of the opportunities it is going to have change quickly and learn the lessons of the music industry.

It is time to rethink TV. It is time to imagine what it could be and redefine it for the participatory culture of tomorrow.

Interactive TV is technology that allows viewers to interact directly with content and brands through use of their TV remote control to request product samples, discounts and information, express opinions, engage in polling and trivia, and more. In a study, 82% of viewers said they would like to be exposed to additional interactive television advertising. It may not be that long before the word “learning” can either be added to — or substituted for — the word “TV” below (emphasis mine):

Many of the TV tablet apps have taken a few tentative steps toward personalisation, but no one has fully embraced the potential of TV interfaces that can learn and change according to an individual’s preferences and tastes.

What a lot of these operators seem to be overlooking is the chance not only to offer content anytime, anywhere, but to personalise the entire TV experience.

While watching the main TV tends to be a group experience, watching TV on an app is much more intimate and personal.

SAN JOSE, CA (May 16, 2011) — Millions of screens today — and millions more by year’s end — will be available to TV app developers and content providers, according to remarks planned by ActiveVideo Networks™ executives for the TV of Tomorrow Show May 17 and 18 in San Francisco.

During the two-day conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, ActiveVideo executives will speak on the “write once, deploy everywhere” merits of cloud-based application creation and delivery on a pair of panels. John Callahan, CTO, will discuss “The Emerging Primacy of the App: The ‘Appification’ of TV and its Implications,” scheduled for Tuesday, May 17, from 3:15 to 4:15 pm; and Michael Taylor, senior vice president, business development will talk about “Envisioning Cable’s Converged Future,” on Wednesday, May 18, from 4:00 to 5:15 pm. The two executives will be joined on the panels by counterparts from PlayJam, Movl, Rovi, NDS, Ooyala, ZeeVee and other companies.

Imagine you are watching a program on your refrigerator. You browse through the program choices using hand gestures. When you walk into the bathroom, the display of your program automatically transfers to the display inside the bathroom mirror.

Does this seem farfetched? All of these capabilities are here now and research gathered by the Cisco “Internet Business Solutions Group” (IBSG) from manufacturers, content producers, service broadcasters and academic experts identifies amazing predictions of what is going to happen in the TV industry and when these changes are likely to occur.

Analysis of the research shows that the three main influences to these events happening include technology, consumer behavior and business models. Multiple supporting technologies have emerged including displays (digital paper and projection devices), ultra-high bandwidth connections and new types of human interfaces (sensory devices). The ways consumers discover and consume media are changing including using social networks (Digg) and on demand content (YouTube), and participating in the creation of TV programs. Business models are changing from pushing a limited number of linear based channels to aggregating many content sources (NetFlix), recommending relevant programs, and adapting media for specific viewers (personalized ads on Facebook). Using this information, the IBSG has identified 10 Predictions for the future of TV.
