The rise of the app/book

App/Books are in fact a new category of entertainment; a combination of book and software application that leverages the best of both mediums. An App/Book is interactive, it can have sound, video, animations. It is more like a random access film than a book in some ways. You watch or listen or interact with any part of the book at any time. Actually, that’s not even a good enough description. An App/Book is potentially more than an application, a book, or a film.

Effective use of Guerra Scale in Moodle — from E-TeachUK

I have just finished producing a short manual “Guerra Scale and Moodle” after coming a across a short article in an article by ASTD “The Guerra Scale”” by Tim Guerra & Dan Heffernan http://www.astd.org/LC/2004/0304_guerra.htm (2004) . This got me thinking about linking their concept with Moodle.

The basic concept behind the Guerras Scale is the scale outlines the range of content that can be found and used online. It is a scale of one to ten with an increase in interactivity, in which one involves the common experience of simply reading notes/text on screen and ten which denotes total virtual reality.

Though this diagram is now out of date, I still like it because it nicely illustrates how deep an online-based “item” can be in terms of the interaction and experience it provides — as well as the difficulty, skillsets, and costs involved in creating such an item.

The 3D Evolution: Part I, Introduction — from Innovative Interactivity by Tracy Boyer

I asked II multimedia education contributor Lynn Marentette to research the emergence of 3D technologies and how it might impact the educational sector. I’ve been really intrigued by this concept and how we might be able to develop interactive 3D applications for a TV console and from my conversations with Lynn, it sounds like this is a promising field that we need to closely watch. We will be cross blogging this biweekly series on here and Lynn’s blog “Interactive Multimedia Technology.” Below is her introduction to the series, which she initially published over at IMT. As always, please let us know if there is a particular issue, question, and/or concept that you would like us to tackle in this series.


I will be featuring topics related to 3D technologies in a series of future posts on the Innovative Interactivity blog. Look forward to discussions on topics related to the history of 3D in films, virtual reality, and games. I’ll also touch on the history of 3D, including films, the evolution of 3D technologies, and the role of the virtual reality and gaming fields in this development. I will also discuss how 3D technologies might impact the future of interactive multimedia, in education, in the home, and the web.

This is where publishers need to go — at least as part of their delivery of educational content. Bring up a textbook, maneuver to chapter ___, and drag the video from the left side of the screen to the right side. Or drag an entire chapter to the right side of the screen to have that chapter unfold before your eyes — and then select the item you want to focus on. Drag your fingers to enlarge the graphics/graph/photo/table/etc.; when you are done discussing that item, shrink it back down, gesture it to the side, and go to the next item. Have the board take pictures accordingly and send those pictures to multiple sources.

From my perspective, the iPad will usher in more interactivity, more multimedia-based content, more end-user control, more choice about the type of media one consumes (even on the same article/topic), and the ability to quickly “drill down” more deeply into a topic.
