Design

The Haworth Planes Height-Adjustable Table has a simple, utilitarian design with a customizable desktop. The significant advantage to this height-adjustable table design from the Haworth Design Studio is that the crossbeam has been moved up directly underneath the table top, which improves its accessibility and range of motion with no reduction of stability at full height extension. The trade-off for this stability seems to be weight—even the smaller version of this sturdy desk (23″ x 58″) is heavy enough to need two people to move it. However, the table has a very wide sit-to-stand range (22″ – 48″), and the raised crossbeam and two-leg design with low-profile feet improve accessibility for wheelchairs and users of different sizes and needs to the point where it exceeds ANSI/HFES 100-2007 requirements. Plus it has a motor and gear set that can handle a load up to 250 lbs, so it’s going to need some weight behind it.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 13, 2011 – Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN) today announced that it and several application partners delivered the next-generation classroom experience at the University of Ottawa. Validated by the university information technology (IT) department, the classroom experience consisted of six leading multimedia educational applications delivered to 100 iPads, concurrently. Each of the applications was delivered simultaneously to all 100 iPads with the highest quality and without any noticeable jitter, delay or frame loss. 100 percent of the iPads passed the multimedia Service Level Agreement (SLA), as measured by VeriWave WaveInsite, which was also used to objectively verify sustained performance of 1Mbps of multimedia streaming to each iPad.

I think there may be something here for the Smart Classrooms of the future. I can’t help but think of some of our courses in astronomy, for example, and that I think that sometimes we are using the wrong technologies to display images and videos to our students. Without investing an enormous amount of money on very high-end projection systems, we lose too much detail with a variety of images that feature galaxies, constellations, etc. with a projected image.

What about if a student could control where they want to zoom in on an image — and not lose any resolution or brightness? What about if they had such high res images available for viewing directly on their iPads? Sounds very interesting to me.

I ran across Braden Kelley’s posting over at Blogging Innovation that’s entitled, “An Innovation Perfect Storm? In that posting, Braden lays out a powerful vision that he’s had for at least 2 years:

I believed two years ago and still believe that what the world needs is not more smart devices, but more flexible and plentiful dumb devices that are driven by the one smart device to rule them all – an extensible smart phone that can not only drive multiple display and input devices wirelessly, but also augment its processing and storage capabilities via wireless devices or the cloud.

Besides mentioning Motorola’s Atrix, RIM’s Blackberry Playbook , and Nintendo’s WiiU, Braden focuses on Apple’s product line. But later on in his posting, he provides a link to Teq’s WiD410 product — a conference room flat panel solution:

 

TEQ AV/IT June-2011 -- might be a part of the future smart classroom

 

Braden’s vision caused me to piggyback on my vision for what I’d like to see in our Smart Classrooms — the ability for students to quickly and easily project/”play” their content for others in the class to see — without interrupting the flow of the class.

This concept holds true for corporate conference rooms & training centers as well.
