Integrating the multimedia assets of a course can raise a host of issues. In my world, this can be as simple as explaining to a client why screens of text with an out-of-sync voice over will not be effective—to more complex issues, such as determining whether an animation will promote greater comprehension than a series of stills.

Although we know it can be advantageous to present content through multiple forms of media, the big question is how to integrate the mediums.

When deciding on these issues, I use two principles from cognitive science as guidelines that I think you’ll find helpful too. One is known as the Split-attention Effect and the other is the Redundancy Principle. Both principles are important.

Abstract
Many of us have been teaching online courses for several years. In that time we have learned what works and what doesn’t from a mix of hands-on-experience, fellow online faculty, platform specific training, and exposure to pedagogical research. While training and research have their value, we learned the most about preparing an effective online course from personal experience and working with our peers. When asked to prepare a presentation for new online faculty we sat down and pooled our knowledge with respect to course design and course management. The result of this collaborative session was a list of pragmatic practices required for a successful online course. While the list could be longer, and certainly doesn’t include all our favorite practices, we believe we have included those practices that are the key to success.

The best-known online players include the University of Phoenix, Walden, and Capella University, with the for-profit Phoenix’s current enrollment of 476,500 students making it the biggest university in North America.

But the brick-and-mortar competition is catching up, from the likes of Northeastern University, Lesley University, and Boston University, while smaller institutions, such as Southern New Hampshire University, in Manchester, are promoting online programs, too.

“It’s hard to think of a college that’s not building its online capability,’’ said Carol Aslanian, a senior vice president of market research at EducationDynamics LLC, a marketing firm that specializes in higher education.

Udemy launches Udemy Academic with 600 courses – 12,000 video lectures — from kirstenwinkler.com

According to an email of Gagan Biyani, Co-Founder of Udemy their platform is now even bigger than Academic Earth or VideoLectures.net.

Udemy Academic features courses from 18 institutions, including UC Berkeley, MIT, Stanford, UCLA, Yale, Columbia, Khan Academy, and more. In total, there are nearly 12,000 free video lectures on Udemy organized into courses – sequential, on-demand content collections that allow anyone to take a University class online.

The most interesting part about this project is that Udemy will be giving away the course creating tool to all major universities which are interested in building their own OpenCourseWare but don’t have the funds or technical skills to do so (emphasis DSC).

OpenCourseWare can cost thousands of dollars per course, and Udemy wants to minimize those costs.

This is fantastic news! Excellent. I’m a big supporter of various charities myself — albeit with far fewer O’s ($$) behind the amounts of my checks than what these folks are able to provide!  🙂     But it got me to thinking…

If the United States government — or the government from another interested nation — could even get 1-2 billion of this enormous accumulation of wealth, think what could be done to create interactive, multimedia-based, engaging, customized/personalized, online learning-based materials that could be offered FREE of charge to various age groups/cognitive levels. Creative simulations and animations could be built and offered — free of charge — to students throughout the world. The materials would be available on a variety of devices for maximum flexibility (laptops, notebooks, iPads, iPhones, tablet PCs, workstations, etc.)

An amazing amount of digital scaffolding could be provided on a variety of disciplines. THIS could represent the Walmart of Education that I’ve been talking about…wow!

Assistive technologies for online learning — from E-Learning Queen

For many — not just those with special needs — participating in an online course is very difficult without assistive technologies. Augmentive and alternative communication products can help students with disabilities. It is useful, however, to look at some assistive technologies as effective for learners who have specific learning preferences and who may benefit from being able to access content in more than one format.

Take a look at the different assistive technologies that are available. You may be surprised how affordable they are, and how helpful they might be for you, especially with respect to keyboards, touchscreens, screen-readers (and “talking books”), and speech recognition.
