SmartBuilder

I have not used this tool myself, but a classmate at Capella University mentioned it. In reviewing the product tour for it, my initial impression was a positive one, as I don’t want to dive deep into scripting and programming languages — and I also want results, quickly.

Camtasia Relay 2 brings searchable video to lecture capture — from The Journal by David Nagel

From DSC:
The idea of being able to search a lecture for a particular section/point seems very useful to me. This article made me reflect on the question (again) of where is the innovation occurring? Is is not within the digital, online, and hybrid-learning worlds? If this sort of innovation continues in these spaces — and I don’t see any signs of these trends abating in the future — will strictly face-to-face environments be able to keep up? Will they be as competitive, relevant, and effective in the new learning worlds that are quickly developing before our eyes?

Expanding on the Nine Events Of Instruction — from the eLearning Coach

The column on the left captures the internal processes of learning, according to Gagne. The middle column, which is still useful, shows ways to provide instructional support to promote each internal process. Finally, the column on the right shows how an intrinsically motivated learner can self-generate the processes of instruction…

Impact -- looking at elearning in the workplace

Impact is an online publication of the E-learning Network of Australasia (ElNet at http://www.elnet.com.au), a not-for-profit organisation and Australia’s only national e-learning association. The journal has been established to address the paucity of research publication avenues that provide a particular emphasis on e-learning in organisational, corporate and workplace settings, and which seek to bridge academic and business communities. Focusing on stimulating and generating dialogue, as well as promoting the development and sharing of evidence-based best practice, the journal publishes both refereed and non-refereed contributions from authors worldwide relating to the design, implementation, evaluation and management of workplace e-learning across a range of sectors and industries.

To me, this device has the potential to really move multimedia-based communications forward.  For one thing, “magazines” will never be the same again.

Colleges See 17 Percent Increase in Online Enrollment — from The Chronicle by Marc Parry

Colleges saw a 17 percent increase in online enrollment, with more than one in four students taking at least one online course in the fall of 2008, according to an annual survey published today by the Sloan Consortium.

The growth rate eclipsed last year’s 12-percent increase and dwarfed the 1.2 percent growth rate of the overall higher-education student population. The report, which has become a widely cited benchmark of distance learning, found a total of more than 4.6-million online students overall. That’s up from about 3.9 million the previous year.

Grant Writers, Get Ready. Bill Gates Is Fired Up About Online Learning. — from The Chronicle, by Marc Parry

Gates Foundation Supporting Online Learning

The quote below is from the Gates Foundation’s 2010 Annual Letter:

“The foundation has made a few grants to drive online learning, but we are just at the start of this work. So far technology has hardly changed formal education at all. But a lot of people, including me, think this is the next place where the Internet will surprise people in how it can improve things—especially in combination with face-to-face learning. With the escalating costs of education, an advance here would be very timely (emphasis DSC).

Paul Simbeck-Hampson has some good thoughts on the term “learning ecosystem” — check them out.

I think, as this blog progresses, blended learning will definitely be a very important element of a learning ecosystem, as it combines the best of both worlds:

Blended learning -- the best of both worlds

I am working on a graphic for “The House of Instruction“. Given all of the building blocks out there, how do we best build such a house? Which materials get used? Can we use them all and let students select which “blocks” work for them?
