The Next Generation of Digitally Enhanced Learning — from The Journal by Scott Aronowitz

At the recent Ed Tech Summit, a technology consultant took a distant look at the future of education, based on both widespread speculation and technologies currently on the market and in development

In his lecture at the Ed Tech Summit at the InfoComm 2010 conference in Las Vegas, Mark S. Valenti, founder and president of Pittsburgh-based technology consulting firm The Sextant Group, delved into the myriad of ways in which advancing technology will continue to enhance, improve, and expand education–both K-12 and post-secondary education–as well as the shifts in priorities and attitudes such advancements will likely cause.

In Valenti’s “big picture” view of the next stage of education, there will be several significant changes, some of which we are already witnessing, that will alter the entire landscape for “providers” of education and related services, e.g., colleges and universities, vocational and trade institutes, public and private K-12 schools, etc., as well as for teachers and students:

* The process will continue to become more technology-dependent;
* There will be increased demand for access, in terms of user capacity, frequency, transmission speed, and content capacity, leading to increased demand for bandwidth;
* Information will become increasingly media rich, which will also impact bandwidth demand; and
* The individual will increasingly become both a consumer and a producer of information, leading to shifts in the dynamic between educators and the educated.

Finally, such technology will lead to a rethinking of the architecture of learning spaces themselves. “Collaboration across time and space will drive facility design [in the coming years]. We’re seeing technologies like Skype become commonplace. We’re seeing major investments from companies like Cisco in things like TelePresence, which is a prime example of cross-collaboration.” Valenti said he believes that, in the long run, in addition to the changes in teaching and learning methods, the physical space that accommodates learning will also change. Classrooms driven by multimedia, virtual hands-on combinations of laboratories and lecture spaces, and the aforementioned virtual operating rooms are all examples of the digitally enhanced learning spaces on the horizon.

According to a recent study by the Institute for Mobile Media Research, smart phones are displacing laptop use for many college students. Nearly 100% of students own a mobile device and 50% of students own a smart phone. The use of smart phone has risen dramatically since the release of other recent reports on student mobile use. Especially important in this study is the finding that text messaging is much more popular than IM and email. This should factor into a university’s decision when developing a new mobile tool. It may be tempting to create educational apps for the iPhone, but it is not a great device for texting and may not be as popular among the student population as other smart phones. Additional findings from the study are included below.

Dallas, Texas — June 23, 2010 — Public School 69 – The New Vision School, an 87-year-old school in the Bronx surrounded by single-family homes and low-rise apartment buildings, has plenty of experience with technology. The launch of KnowledgeWorks’ new website has provided us with an occasion to articulate more precisely what we mean when we say that we want to transform education in the US from a world of schooling to a world of learning.  Here’s an extract from it describing what we envision:

A world of learning
The vision emerging from our study of the future doesn’t much resemble the industrial-era world of schooling most of us know. Instead, we foresee a world of learning where:

  • Education centers on the needs of learners, not those of institutions. Teaching is tailored to an individual student’s needs and abilities.
  • Learners take charge of their education. Students and families seek out information and experiences from an array of sources rather than depending on schools to direct their learning.
  • Children gain 21st-century knowledge and skills – how to make decisions, solve problems and create solutions – through hands-on experiences that cross subject areas and are connected to the real world.
  • Success is judged through a wide array of measures that account for different learning styles and assess capabilities and progress, not simply acquisition of knowledge.
  • All learners have easy access to technology and other tools that open doors to information and knowledge.
  • Learners are supported in all parts of their lives, with physical, emotional and social health being nurtured alongside intellectual growth.
  • Teachers are more than content specialists. The teaching profession diversifies to include such roles as learning coaches, classroom coordinators, cognitive specialists, resource managers and community liaisons.
  • Learning isn’t limited to a physical place or time of day, but is mobile and constant, with wireless technologies allowing learning anywhere and anytime.

Netbooks are leading K-12 mobile device sales, growing at 200 percent per year. Learning management systems--rather than controlling the learning environment for children–are actually augmenting interactions between the teacher and student. And one in five schools and districts that don’t already offer online courses expect to do so in the next two school years. Those are some of the many observations that surface in the latest set of reports on K-12 and postsecondary education technology markets produced by the Education Division of the Software & Information Industry Association, a trade association for the software and digital content industry.

SIIA Trends Report for Education Technology highlights industry shifts and emerging trends as they relate to five topics: K-12 learning management systems, postsecondary learning management systems, online learning, mobile computing, and the state of education in the face of increasing budget cuts at the state level.

“The purpose of this report was to identify the opportunities, challenges, and potential areas for growth in K-12 and higher education institutions with regards to education technology,” said Karen Billings, vice president SIIA’s Education Division. “We aimed to find where technology has the greatest impact and where it can provide the most prolific benefits moving forward.”
