Tracking e-learning growth

Other excerpts/quotes:

  • “The archetypes … are changing. Teachers are students. Students are teachers. And so our notion of a linear learning curve that is completely dictated by your age and by your grade and all this stuff, it all blows up.”
  • But while students, parents, teachers and administrators all appear to be more open to online learning, the infrastructure to accommodate that demand is still evolving—and at this point still falling short, the survey finds.
  • Administrators appear to be reacting to the demand by shifting their focus toward online learning for students. Yet their primary focus for online learning continues to be for professional development, the report says.

Effective use of Guerra Scale in Moodle — from E-TeachUK

I have just finished producing a short manual “Guerra Scale and Moodle” after coming a across a short article in an article by ASTD “The Guerra Scale”” by Tim Guerra & Dan Heffernan http://www.astd.org/LC/2004/0304_guerra.htm (2004) . This got me thinking about linking their concept with Moodle.

The basic concept behind the Guerras Scale is the scale outlines the range of content that can be found and used online. It is a scale of one to ten with an increase in interactivity, in which one involves the common experience of simply reading notes/text on screen and ten which denotes total virtual reality.

Though this diagram is now out of date, I still like it because it nicely illustrates how deep an online-based “item” can be in terms of the interaction and experience it provides — as well as the difficulty, skillsets, and costs involved in creating such an item.

The Wisetail Learning Ecosystem

Justin Bigart, Founder + President
Wisetail / The social side of e-learning
www.wisetail.com / www.learningecosystems.com

From DSC:
While listening to Justin, several things that he said jumped out at me:

  • Learning is social
  • Audience engagement is critical
  • The definition of what is considered training content has to evolve and should be more conversational in nature; more of this material needs to be created by the people in your organization who are interacting with your clients
  • Your audience is changing

Also:

  • Use video-based content, built around storytelling
  • Use people within your organization that are the best at that act or who model that behavior or who are the ambassadors of the concept that you are trying to relay/implement
  • Make it raw, real, unscripted
  • Use socially-aware technologies and layer that with advocacy-based / video-based training

Why E-Learning is so effective –from The Rapid eLearning Blog

“E-learning is hot. And for good reason. If done right, it can produce great results by decreasing costs and improving performance. Also, unlike a one time classroom session, the elearning course is available for others.  This includes the static elearning course as well as any ongoing conversations in networked communities.  Recently, I had a conversation with someone new to elearning and it struck me that she didn’t fully understand the value of elearning.  I think this is common as more people are joining the world of elearning.  Understanding elearning’s value helps you make the best decisions about when and why to use it.”

Below is an excerpt from Kineo’s perspectives on the e-learning market in 2010:

What can we expect in 2010?
It is the first month of a new decade. Here at Kineo we have been doing some strategic thinking (and a little crystal ball gazing) on what changes the next 12 months will see. We outline here our top 5 e-learning predictions for 2010.

In Kineo we have been debating what the future holds for us in 2010. We started by having a look at the predictions from the various gurus in the e-learning world and been testing these internally.

In terms of the environment in which learning departments operate we know that:

  • The pace of change continues to accelerate
  • The world becomes increasingly regulated
  • The volume of information will continue to grow expotentially
  • Technology will change and converge including broadcast media, the internet and the mobile internet

As a consequence jobs will become more complex and require a wider range of skills, knowledge and experience.

  1. our first prediction is a growth in e-learning expenditure across all areas with the exception of learning management systems.
  2. …second prediction: Moodle will continue to surge ahead in the corporate sector
  3. …third prediction is a continued rise in rapid e-learning solutions supported by improving tools from the likes of Articulate and the ability to create assets such as video and audio quickly and cheaply.
  4. So our fourth prediction is a more sophisticated use of digital resources to provide online performance support.
  5. There is a growing demand for anytime, anywhere learning and whilst we are not sure this will come from mobile learning (yet) our fifth prediction is a significant increase in the accessibility of online learning opportunities.
