I’m trying to keep a pulse check on the future of education, and I’m finding that we should be teaching futurism throughout higher education. The pace of change is simply too fast and our graduates need to be able to scan their respective landscapes. As you know, change is the norm now and they will need to be very flexible. It will help them if they know how to do some of the things you were talking about: environmental scanning, trends analysis, driver identification, scenario construction, etc.
You probably already know about these, but some of the relevant books that I liked from my Masters Program in ID for Online Learning included:
