It’s interesting to see the lines blurring between the workplace, higher education, and even K-12. Pooling resources, establishing more collaborations, etc. may be part of our future — especially if it initially costs a lot create the materials. But then — as with the Walmart of Education — there is some serious volume underlying these trends.

It appears from the introductory piece here that Sal’s not out to make money with this — he’s trying to stay true to their mission.

JPMorgan Chase plans to give $17 million to start a doctoral program at the University of Delaware, an effort that may raise new questions about collaborations between colleges and donors.

As part of the plan, JPMorgan will renovate a building to house the program, put up money to pay program faculty and pay a full ride for students seeking a degree, according to an internal university plan. In addition, JPMorgan employees may sit on dissertation committees and advise the university on which faculty members should teach in the program, according to the planning document and a top university official.

Is there a new trend forming here? Will there be tighter integration between the corporate world and the world of higher education? 

If so, my thoughts re: The Walmart of Education and Learning from the Living [Class] Room could be taking a giant step forward.  I say this because such visions require some serious resources.  It will take a handful of larger organizations with deep pockets — and or many smaller organizations pooling their resources — to enable these trends.  But we are starting to see some organizations with deep pockets forming such partnerships out there.

Is this all a good thing? In some ways yes, in other ways, I’m not so sure. There are a variety of reasons to go to college; getting a job is just one of them. But given the price of education, things are now out of balance; students are now being forced into a more career-focused perspective for their college experience.

Also, given the pace of change, those in the corporate world have a decision to make — should they work with current institutions to enable change, create their own communities of practice, bring further training in house,…other?

Many of our learning spaces — if not all of them — need to be completely interchangeable, flexible, mobile, adaptive.  Putting chairs and tables on wheels is a great place to start!  I also like what they did w/ the electricity here; very flexible.

I’m amazed that Lowe’s, Home Depot, & others aren’t doing more of this!  Why can’t I Skype/Facetime with an expert over at Home Depot on how to fix my disposal, identify what part I need in my broken garage door opener, how to put together that new crib that someone gave to our church, etc.

My good friend, Don Levy from Calvin College, thought of an idea a while back just like this!  But his idea was targeted for colleges & universities — call the Subject Matter Experts at Calvin College and get instant help.

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see more of this sort of remote support in our futures.

While the CIO has historically been focused on the technology needed to run the company, the CTO has been responsible for the technology integral to products being sold to customers or clients. However, over the next five years every business process is going to undergo a major transformation. For example, IBM executives recently shared with me that over 40 percent of their profits are now coming from products and services that were impossible just a few short years ago. That reflects the transformative nature of business today as well as the speed of the transformation. This is just the beginning and someone has to lead that transformation.

What Daniel Burrus is saying here is what I’ve also been trying to get at when I say that technology needs to be used strategically. The organizations that will thrive in the future will have cultures that are willing to experiment and innovate. They realize that they will fail at times and succeed at other times. They also realize that batting a thousand is not an option — as there are too many targets moving far too quickly (and some targets appearing out of nowhere…while some disappear).

First of all, thanks to George Siemens for posting this item on Twitter.  Secondly, as I mentioned there, many people have left Detroit through the years, leaving an aging infrastructure that still needs to be paid for, but with a constantly dwindling tax base. 

What are some of the lessons other cities, towns, and villages can learn from this?

One potential item that comes to my mind is to not put all of our eggs into one basket.  Detroit was too focused on the automobile; we should have diversified more.  (This could also be said of our careers/skillsets I suppose…)

Anyway, the people of Detroit have been on my heart and mind for years now.  I internally pitched an idea a while back whereby our student teachers in our Education Department could employ web-based collaboration tools to help the youth of Detroit in their studies.  It seemed like a potential WIN-WIN situation — providing real-world teaching experience to our current EDUC students (and most likely opening up completely new experiences for them) while at the same time providing some solid/free tutoring/assistance for the students of Detroit.
