Here\u2019s how to thrive in today\u2019s workplace without a college degree.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cWe are beginning to break down the national narrative that you have to go to college to get a \u2018good job\u2019,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kathleen-delaski-1089012b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kathleen-delaski-1089012b\/\" aria-label=\"Kathleen deLaski\">Kathleen deLaski<\/a>, author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoneedscollegeanymore.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.whoneedscollegeanymore.org\/\" aria-label=\"Who Needs College Anymore?\">Who Needs College Anymore?<\/a>\u201d and founder and chairman of The Education Design Lab.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThe fastest growing form of college enrollment is actually short term certificates and certifications at community colleges, rather than degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>But the real dealbreaker is the fast-rising cost of college, especially for the debt-averse Generation Z. \u201cMost folks know someone who is saddled by student debt,\u201d says deLaski. \u201cSo they have more of a \u2018buyer-beware\u2019 view when considering a four year degree.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">This presents a challenge especially to younger workers, who simply haven\u2019t had the time yet to gain that experience. It\u2019s a catch-22: to land the entry-level job, you must have experience, but to gain that experience, you have to have that entry-level job.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The answer is to expand our definition of work experience. It doesn\u2019t have to be gained in the exact field where you want to be hired, nor does it strictly have to be in an employment setting. \u201cEarning certifications, doing internships and apprenticeships, even volunteering, and leading a team or a project really add authenticity to your resume,\u201d says deLaski.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In other words, work skills gained via personal experience are usually highly transferable to other industries.
