Peters <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>(DSC: This is a gifted article.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>If lawyers and law firms won\u2019t stand up for the rule of law, who will?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Beyond the Perkins Coie executive order, Mr. Trump has issued similar, and equally unlawful, executive orders directed at other law firms that have represented causes or people he doesn\u2019t like, including because they have sued him, investigated him or contributed in some way to civil and criminal legal matters brought against him.<\/strong><\/span> That includes executive orders in recent days targeting the firms WilmerHale and Jenner &amp; Block. He also issued a\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/preventing-abuses-of-the-legal-system-and-the-federal-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">memorandum<\/a>\u00a0directed across the board at lawyers and law firms that have taken on causes he disfavors, including the pro bono representation of political asylum seekers.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nWe applaud Jenner &amp; Block\u2019s and WilmerHale\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/28\/business\/jenner-block-wilmer-hale-trump-lawsuit.html\">lawsuits<\/a>, filed Friday, challenging the administration\u2019s executive orders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">To the shock and dismay of many in our profession, the law firm Paul, Weiss, with a tradition of fighting for justice \u2014 and also the subject of one of Mr. Trump\u2019s executive orders \u2014 chose not to fight for itself or for our legal system. Instead, the firm capitulated, agreeing to direct\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/nyregion\/what-is-paul-weiss.html\">$40 million worth<\/a>\u00a0of free legal work to causes Mr. Trump supports. (Mr. Trump\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/28\/trump-skadden-law-firm-executive-order.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>\u00a0on Friday that another major firm, Skadden, Arps, had agreed to a similar arrangement to avoid an executive order punishing it.)
