[Christian]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">The following reflections were catalyzed by <a href=\"https:\/\/jeffselingo-14576223.hs-sites.com\/%F0%9F%8F%9F%EF%B8%8F-the-biggest-upset-in-college-sports-yet-to-come?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jeff Selingo&#8217;s <em>Next<\/em> posting from 10\/22<\/strong><\/a>, specifically the item:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Student fees for athletics, dark money in college sports, and why this all matters to every student, every college.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">All of this has big risks for institutions.\u00a0But whenever I talk to faculty and administrators on campuses about this, many will wave me away and say, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not a college sports fan\u201d or \u201cWe\u2019re a Division III school, so that all this doesn\u2019t impact us.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Nothing is further from the truth<\/span><\/strong>, as we explored on a recent episode of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futureupodcast.com\/episodes\/the-seismic-impact-of-college-athletics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hs-link-id=\"0\"><em>Future U.<\/em>\u00a0podcast<\/a>, where we welcomed in Matt Brown, editor of the\u00a0<em>Extra Points<\/em>\u00a0newsletter, which looks at academic and financial issues in college sports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">As we learned, despite the siloed nature of higher ed, everything is connected to athletics: research, academics, market position. Institutions can rise and fall on the backs of their athletics programs \u2013 and we\u2019re not talking about wins and losses, but real budget dollars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">And if you want to know about the impact on students, look no further than the news out of Clemson this week. It is following several other universities in adopting<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/clemson-approves-athletics-fee-students-184825066.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hs-link-id=\"0\">an \u201cathletics fee\u201d: $300 a year<\/a><span style=\"color: #800000;\">. Here\u2019s what we know<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&#8212; from sports.yahoo.com by Chapel Fowler<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>How much are student fees at other schools?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">That\u2019s true in the state of South Carolina, when comparing the annual fees of Clemson ($300) and USC ($172) to Coastal Carolina ($2,090). Sports can and should be fun for us to play. I played many an hour of sports in my youth and I occasionally play some sports these days. Plus, s<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">ports are excellent for helping us keep in shape and take care of our bodies. Sports can help us connect with others and make some fun\/good memories with our friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So there&#8217;s much good to playing sports. But have we elevated sports to places they were never meant to be?
