Since the\u00a0first incarcerated bachelor\u2019s graduates\u00a0got their degrees from California State University Los Angeles at the state prison in Lancaster in 2021, California prisons now offer 11 bachelor\u2019s programs, with two more starting next year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Several of those Cal State LA grads continued on to the master\u2019s program, which is open to students across California\u2019s 34 prisons. On Wednesday, plaintiffs filed a motion seeking to make the case a class action lawsuit. Attorneys estimate the suit could affect hundreds of individuals currently in custody.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/criminal-justice\/2024\/09\/25\/lawsuits-claim-black-students-in-northwesterns-prison-education-program-were-unjustly-disciplined?utm_source=college-inside.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=creating-a-pathway-for-incarcerated-college-graduates&amp;_bhlid=1ddcdd550494ceb7d5fb12fbd52e22f7e6329748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lawsuits claim Black students in Northwestern\u2019s prison education program were unjustly disciplined<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&#8212; from\u00a0wbez.org<br \/>\n<em>The men claim their efforts to prevent educators from being harassed inside were labeled as gang activity by prison officials.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">A pair of federal lawsuits claim the Illinois Department of Corrections unjustly disciplined two Black students in Northwestern University\u2019s prison education program because the students worked together to prevent university staff from harassment during their visits to the prison. Corrections officials deemed the coordinated effort to \u201cstop problems\u201d gang-related activity, according to the federal complaints.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The lawsuits were filed Wednesday morning.
