Digital alternatives can change that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpts:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I fear that we in the academy are willfully ignoring this problem. Bring up student-loan debt and you\u2019ll hear that it\u2019s the government\u2019s fault. Bring up online learning and you\u2019ll hear that it is \u2014 and always will be \u2014 inferior to in-person education. Bring up exclusionary admissions practices and you\u2019ll hear something close to, \u201cWell, the poor can attend community colleges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">On one hand, our defensiveness is natural. Change is hard, and technological change that risks making traditional parts of our sector obsolete is even harder. \u201cA professor must have an incentive to adopt new technology,\u201d a tenured colleague recently told me regarding online learning. \u201cInnovation adoption will occur one funeral at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">But while our defense of the status quo is understandable, maybe we should ask whether it\u2019s ethical, given what we know about the injustice inherent in our current system. I believe a happier future for all involved \u2014 faculty, administrators, and students \u2014 is within reach, but requires we stop reflexively protecting our deeply flawed system. How can we do that? We could start by embracing three fundamental principles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>1. Digitization\u00a0<i>will<\/i>\u00a0change higher education.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/b><b>2. We should\u00a0<i>want<\/i>\u00a0to embrace this change.<br \/>\n<\/b><b>&#8230;<br \/>\n3. We have a <i>way<\/i>\u00a0to embrace this change.<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>I fear that we in the academy are willfully ignoring this problem.
