To solve this problem within four years, we\u2019re starting a new team, co-led by Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, and dedicating 20% of the compute we\u2019ve secured to date to this effort. We\u2019re looking for excellent ML researchers and engineers to join us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpts <span style=\"color: #800000;\">(emphasis DSC):<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How do we ensure AI systems much smarter than humans follow human intent?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/em>&#8230;<br \/>\nCurrently, we don&#8217;t have a solution for steering or controlling a potentially superintelligent AI, and preventing it from going rogue. Our current techniques for aligning AI, such as\u00a0reinforcement learning from human feedback, rely on humans\u2019 ability to supervise AI. <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But humans won\u2019t be able to reliably supervise AI systems much smarter than us,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>and so our current alignment techniques will not scale to superintelligence. We need new scientific and technical breakthroughs.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Our goal is to build a roughly human-level\u00a0automated alignment researcher.<\/strong> <\/span>We can then use vast amounts of compute to scale our efforts, and iteratively align superintelligence.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC:<\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b>Hold up. We&#8217;ve been told for years that AI is at the toddler stage. But now assertions are being made that AI systems are smarter than humans &#8212; much smarter even. That said, then why is the <em>goal<\/em> of OpenAI to build a roughly <em>human<\/em>-level automated alignment researcher if humans aren&#8217;t that smart after all&#8230;? <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Which is it? I must be missing or misunderstanding something here&#8230;<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>OpenAI<\/b>\u00a0are jumping back on the alignment bandwagon\u00a0with the brilliantly-named\u00a0<b>Superalignment Team<\/b>. And you guessed it &#8211; they\u2019re\u00a0<b>researching alignment of future superintelligent AIs<\/b>. They reckon that AI can align other AI faster than humans can, and the plan is to build an AI that does just that.
