Maybe it&#8217;s time we empowered the people who are already there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jordanfurlong.substack.com\/p\/building-a-bridge-to-justice-from\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa0d4ee5e-2842-4300-a87c-c3fc64a0ebfe_1400x974.jpeg\" alt=\"An enormous and intricate bridge with parts of it bending down and part of it bending up -- creating a criss-cross pattern\" width=\"1400\" height=\"974\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpts:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Given all that, I think it\u2019s time we tried <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>a\u00a0<em>demand-side approach<\/em>\u00a0instead<\/strong> <\/span>\u2014 one that doesn\u2019t require us to licence and deploy more legal services professionals, but instead focuses on and empowers those who are already dealing with people\u2019s unmet and unrecognized legal needs.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>So if we\u2019re not looking for legal professionals, who are we looking for?<\/strong> <\/span>If we take a user-centred, needs-focused approach, we\u2019ll find ourselves looking for someone who\u2019s familiar to and trusted by the vulnerable people with unmet legal needs, who\u2019s walked with them, earned their confidence over time \u2014 \u201csomeone who looks like them, understands their situation, and are trusted members of their community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">These individuals are\u00a0<em>already present <\/em>in the lives of people with unmet legal needs. <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">They\u2019re community activists, librarians, hospital employees, teachers, social workers, homeless advocates, therapists, food bank employees, members of a religious order, financial counsellors, mental health clinic staffers, juvenile case workers, and many others.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Building a bridge to justice from the other side &#8212; from jordanfurlong.substack.com by Jordan Furlong Our professional-centric approach to resolving unmet legal needs hasn&#8217;t worked.
