For the last three decades, researchers made enormous progress in understanding how human brains learn. If we can teach in a way that capitalizes on these findings\u2014if we can apply the science to the classrooms\u2014we will have evidence-based ways of helping children grow the suite of skills that will make them successful in today\u2019s classrooms and the workplaces of tomorrow. Our Brookings report,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/policy2020\/bigideas\/a-new-path-to-education-reform-playful-learning-promotes-21st-century-skills-in-schools-and-beyond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A New Path to Educational Reform<\/a>\u00a0and our book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/events\/making-schools-work-how-the-science-of-learning-can-help-students-thrive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Making Schools Work: Bringing the Science of Learning to Joyful Classroom Practice<\/em>,<\/a>\u00a0detail how this research in the science of learning can offer a scalable, evidenced based path to re-invigorating and re-imagining education for our time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Children learn when they are\u00a0<em>active<\/em>, not passive observers of what is taught. Children learn when they are\u00a0<em>engaged<\/em> in the material and not distracted, when the information is <em>meaningfully <\/em>connected to their knowledge in ways that are culturally responsive. They learn best in <em>social<\/em>\u00a0contexts, when there are strong teacher-student and peer relationships, when the information is\u00a0<em>iteratively<\/em>\u00a0presented multiple times in slightly different ways, and when the learning is\u00a0<em>joyful<\/em>. Yes, it is possible to have joyful teaching that affords deeper learning.
