Cardona called college rankings \u201ca joke,\u201d and took aim at selective colleges\u2019 obsession with them, as he made a broader push on Thursday for closing stubborn equity gaps in the nation\u2019s college-graduation rates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cMany institutions spend enormous time and money chasing rankings they feel carry prestige, but in truth do little more than Xerox privilege,\u201d Cardona said, attributing the phrase to the president of a historically Black college.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">There\u2019s a \u201cwhole science behind climbing up the rankings\u201d that leads to misplaced priorities, Cardona said. The best-resourced colleges are playing a prestige game instead of centering \u201cmeasures that truly count,\u201d he said. \u201cThat system of ranking is a joke.\u201d<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Cardona called for a \u201cculture change\u201d in higher ed<\/strong> <\/span>so that institutions would value inclusivity, use data to help students before they dropped out, and create more-accessible pathways for adult learners, rural students, and first-generation students.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>\u201cLet\u2019s confer prestige on colleges\u2019 breaking cycles of poverty. Let\u2019s raise the profiles of institutions delivering real upward mobility, like all of you,\u201d Cardona told attendees, echoing an\u00a0essay\u00a0he wrote for\u00a0<i>The Chronicle<\/i>\u00a0on Thursday<i>.<\/i>\u00a0\u201cLet\u2019s turn the universities that walk the walk on equity into household names.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The above item re: culture change caught my eye.<\/strong> Coming out of college, I didn&#8217;t think about the culture of an organization. It didn&#8217;t mean anything to me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But as the years went by &#8212; and especially as I was working for Kraft Foods at the time when it got acquired by Philip Morris &#8212; I began understanding the power and influence of the culture of an organization. That power and influence could be positive and helpful or it could be negative and could stunt the growth of the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>I personally question whether many of the existing cultures within our colleges and universities have the ability to change.<\/strong> Time will tell. But the culture of places where I&#8217;ve worked had a (sometimes strong) distaste for the corporate world. They didn&#8217;t want to be called a &#8220;business.&#8221; I put that word <em>business<\/em> in quotes purposefully &#8212; as the term was spoken with disdain. The higher calling of higher education could not be considered a business&#8230;yeh right.
