But if you believe the sci-fi hype or get bogged down in the technology, it can be difficult to relate them to today\u2019s workplaces and jobs.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Excerpt:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Here are three everyday examples of their potential, expressed in terms of the business challenge they are addressing or how consumers will experience them. I don\u2019t mean to over simplify \u2013 these are powerful tools \u2013 but I think their potential shines through best when they\u2019re expressed in their simplest terms.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I have an issue with one of their examples that involves positioning AI as the savior of the hiring process:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The problem with this process isn\u2019t just that it\u2019s hugely time-consuming, it\u2019s that all kinds of unconscious biases can creep in, potentially even into the job advert. These issues can be eradicated with the use of AI, which can vet ads for gendered language, sort through applicants and pick out the most suitable ones in a fraction of the time it would take an HR professional or any other human being.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">AI can be biased as well &#8212; just like humans. Lamb recognizes this as well when he states that <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&#8220;Provided the algorithms are written correctly, <\/em>AI will be key to organisations addressing issues around diversity and inclusion in the workplace.&#8221; <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But that&#8217;s a big IF in my mind. So far, <a href=\"https:\/\/www-wsj-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/www.wsj.com\/amp\/articles\/companies-need-more-workers-why-do-they-reject-millions-of-resumes-11630728008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it appears that the track record isn&#8217;t great in this area.<\/a> <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Also, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_2u_eHHzRto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cathy O&#8217;Neil asserts:<\/a> \u201cAlgorithms are opinions embedded in code.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">AI may not be as adept as a skilled HR professional in seeing the possibilities for someone.
