{"id":76322,"date":"2021-08-09T02:00:18","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T06:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=76322"},"modified":"2021-08-12T10:20:57","modified_gmt":"2021-08-12T14:20:57","slug":"traveling-down-the-road-as-a-metaphor-for-the-terms-learning-objectives-learning-outcomes-christian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2021\/08\/09\/traveling-down-the-road-as-a-metaphor-for-the-terms-learning-objectives-learning-outcomes-christian\/","title":{"rendered":"Traveling down the road as a metaphor for the terms &#8220;learning objectives&#8221; &#038; &#8220;learning outcomes&#8221; [Christian]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC:<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">As I was traveling down one of the local roads the other day, the thought reoccurred to me &#8230;that driving along a road is such an apt metaphor for this idea of using the terms<strong> &#8220;learning objectives&#8221;<\/strong> and<strong> &#8220;learning outcomes.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I&#8217;m going down the same road.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>I can look <em>ahead<\/em> to see<em> where I want to go<\/em>.<\/strong> But that doesn&#8217;t mean that I&#8217;m for sure going to get there. That&#8217;s where I&#8217;m heading and I hope that I will get there, but several things will need to go right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>OR&#8230;I can look in the rearview mirror of my car and see <\/strong><em><strong>where I&#8217;ve already been<\/strong>&#8230;.what&#8217;s already taken place<\/em>. I&#8217;ve already passed such and such a point (or points).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-76327 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/rear-view-mirror.jpg\" alt=\"I can see where I've been by looking in the rearview mirror -- or I can look ahead to see what I'm traveling towards\" width=\"448\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/rear-view-mirror.jpg 448w, https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/rear-view-mirror-150x72.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">That is, <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I can&#8217;t talk about learning <em>outcomes<\/em> if I&#8217;m just getting on the road. At that point, I can talk about where I <em>hope<\/em> to go (i.e., my learning objectives), but I can&#8217;t talk about my learning outcomes until I&#8217;ve been traveling for a while.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Where this gets muddy\/tricky is when we discuss <em>entire programs.<\/em> Then the term &#8220;learning outcomes&#8221; is often used.
