Attendance awards don\u2019t work and can actually\u00a0<em>increase<\/em>\u00a0absences. And while we\u2019ve known that school discipline tends to disproportionately harm students of color, a new study reveals a key reason why: Compared with their peers, black students tend to receive fewer warnings for misbehavior before being punished.<br \/>\n&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"section-heading\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>CUT THE ARTS AT YOUR OWN RISK, RESEARCHERS WARN<\/strong><br \/>\nAs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.unl.edu\/jwel\/212\/\">arts programs continue to face the budget ax<\/a>, a handful of new studies suggest that\u2019s a grave mistake. The arts provide cognitive, academic, behavioral, and social benefits that go far beyond simply learning how to play music or perform scenes in a play.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In a major\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kinder.rice.edu\/sites\/g\/files\/bxs1676\/f\/documents\/Investigating%20Causal%20Effects%20of%20Arts%20Education%20Experiences%20Final_0.pdf\">new study<\/a>\u00a0from Rice University involving 10,000 students in third through eighth grades, researchers determined that expanding a school\u2019s arts programs improved writing scores, increased the students\u2019 compassion for others, and reduced disciplinary infractions. The benefits of such programs may be especially pronounced for students who come from low-income families, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/buy\/2019-06332-001\">10-year study<\/a>\u00a0of 30,000 students released in 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Unexpectedly, another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.heliyon.2019.e01315\">recent study<\/a>\u00a0found that artistic commitment\u2014think of a budding violinist or passionate young thespian\u2014can boost executive function skills like focus and working memory, linking the arts to a set of overlooked skills that are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4210770\/\">highly correlated to success<\/a>\u00a0in both academics and life.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Failing to identify and support students with learning disabilities early can have dire, long-term consequences. In a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2019-25332-001\">comprehensive 2019 analysis<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">researchers highlighted the need to provide interventions that align with critical phases of early brain development.
