She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-24982\" class=\"text Luke-2-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-24983\" class=\"text Luke-2-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>An angel\u00a0of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-24984\" class=\"text Luke-2-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>But the angel said to them, \u201cDo not be afraid.\u00a0I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-24985\" class=\"text Luke-2-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>Today in the town of David a Savior\u00a0has been born to you; he is the Messiah,\u00a0the Lord.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-24986\" class=\"text Luke-2-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>This will be a sign\u00a0to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-24987\" class=\"text Luke-2-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\"><span id=\"en-NIV-24988\" class=\"text Luke-2-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cGlory to God in the highest heaven,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-2-14\">and on earth peace\u00a0to those on whom his favor rests.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-24989\" class=\"text Luke-2-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, \u201cLet\u2019s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-24990\" class=\"text Luke-2-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-24991\" class=\"text Luke-2-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-24992\" class=\"text Luke-2-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-24993\" class=\"text Luke-2-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-24994\" class=\"text Luke-2-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God\u00a0for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-24995\" class=\"text Luke-2-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child,\u00a0he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-24996\" class=\"text Luke-2-22\">Jesus Presented in the Temple<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-2-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-24997\" class=\"text Luke-2-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, \u201cEvery firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord\u201d<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NIV-24997b\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-24997b&quot; title=&quot;See footnote b&quot;&gt;b&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+2&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-24997b\">b<\/a>]<\/sup>),<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-24998\" class=\"text Luke-2-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: \u201ca pair of doves or two young pigeons.\u201d<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NIV-24998c\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-24998c&quot; title=&quot;See footnote c&quot;&gt;c&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+2&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-24998c\">c<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-24999\" class=\"text Luke-2-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.\u00a0He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,\u00a0and the Holy Spirit was on him.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25000\" class=\"text Luke-2-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord\u2019s Messiah.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25001\" class=\"text Luke-2-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25002\" class=\"text Luke-2-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-05\"><span id=\"en-NIV-25003\" class=\"text Luke-2-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cSovereign Lord, as you have promised,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-2-29\">you may now dismiss<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NIV-25003d\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-25003d&quot; title=&quot;See footnote d&quot;&gt;d&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+2&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-25003d\">d<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0your servant in peace.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-NIV-25004\" class=\"text Luke-2-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>For my eyes have seen your salvation,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span id=\"en-NIV-25005\" class=\"text Luke-2-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-NIV-25006\" class=\"text Luke-2-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>a light for revelation to the Gentiles,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Luke-2-32\">and the glory of your people Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-25007\" class=\"text Luke-2-33\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>The child\u2019s father and mother marveled at what was said about him.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25008\" class=\"text Luke-2-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:\u00a0\u201cThis child is destined to cause the falling\u00a0and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25009\" class=\"text Luke-2-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35\u00a0<\/sup>so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-25010\" class=\"text Luke-2-36\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>There was also a prophet,\u00a0Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-25011\" class=\"text Luke-2-37\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37\u00a0<\/sup>and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NIV-25011e\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-25011e&quot; title=&quot;See footnote e&quot;&gt;e&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+2&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-25011e\">e<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25012\" class=\"text Luke-2-38\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38\u00a0<\/sup>Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-25013\" class=\"text Luke-2-39\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39\u00a0<\/sup>When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25014\" class=\"text Luke-2-40\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40\u00a0<\/sup>And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-25015\" class=\"text Luke-2-41\">The Boy Jesus at the Temple<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Luke-2-41\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41\u00a0<\/sup>Every year Jesus\u2019 parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-25016\" class=\"text Luke-2-42\"><sup class=\"versenum\">42\u00a0<\/sup>When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25017\" class=\"text Luke-2-43\"><sup class=\"versenum\">43\u00a0<\/sup>After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25018\" class=\"text Luke-2-44\"><sup class=\"versenum\">44\u00a0<\/sup>Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25019\" class=\"text Luke-2-45\"><sup class=\"versenum\">45\u00a0<\/sup>When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25020\" class=\"text Luke-2-46\"><sup class=\"versenum\">46\u00a0<\/sup>After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-25021\" class=\"text Luke-2-47\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47\u00a0<\/sup>Everyone who heard him was amazed\u00a0at his understanding and his answers.<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-25022\" class=\"text Luke-2-48\"><sup class=\"versenum\">48\u00a0<\/sup>When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother\u00a0said to him, \u201cSon, why have you treated us like this? Your father\u00a0and I have been anxiously searching for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-25023\" class=\"text Luke-2-49\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">49\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhy were you searching for me?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he asked.\u00a0<span class=\"woj\">\u201cDidn\u2019t you know I had to be in my Father\u2019s house?\u201d<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NIV-25023f\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-25023f&quot; title=&quot;See footnote f&quot;&gt;f&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+2&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-25023f\">f<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-25024\" class=\"text Luke-2-50\"><sup class=\"versenum\">50\u00a0<\/sup>But they did not understand what he was saying to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-25025\" class=\"text Luke-2-51\"><sup class=\"versenum\">51\u00a0<\/sup>Then he went down to Nazareth with them\u00a0and was obedient to them.
