{"id":63451,"date":"2018-04-25T09:31:49","date_gmt":"2018-04-25T13:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=63451"},"modified":"2018-04-25T11:55:19","modified_gmt":"2018-04-25T15:55:19","slug":"improving-our-communications-skills-throughout-the-entire-learning-continuum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2018\/04\/25\/improving-our-communications-skills-throughout-the-entire-learning-continuum\/","title":{"rendered":"Improving our communications skills throughout the entire learning continuum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">As important as being able to effectively communicate with others is, I think we could do a better job throughout the entire learning continuum of proving more coaching in this regard. <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">We should <strong>provide far more courses, and\/or e-learning based modules, and\/or examples where someone is being coached on how best to communicate in a variety of situations.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Some examples\/scenarios along the continuum (i.e, pre-K-12, higher ed and\/or vocational work, and the workplace) might include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For children communicating with each other<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to ask if someone wants to play (and how best to find an activity everyone wants to do; or how to handle getting a no each time)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to handle a situation where one&#8217;s friend is really angry about something or is being extra quiet about something<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to listen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For children communicating with adults (and vice versa)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to show respect<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to listen<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Not being shy but feeling free to say what&#8217;s on their mind with a known\/respected adult<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For highschoolers <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Wondering how best to interview for that new job<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For communicating with parents<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to handle issues surrounding diversity and showing respect for differences<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to listen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For college students <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Wondering how best to interview for that new job<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Encouraging them to use their professors&#8217; office hours &#8212; and to practice communication-related skills therein as well<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For communicating with parents, and vice versa<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to listen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For those entering the workplace<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to communicate with co-workers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For dealing with customers who are irate about something that happened (or didn&#8217;t happen) to them<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to listen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For managers and their communications with their employees<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to encourage<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to handle disciplinary issues or change behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to listen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For leaders and their communications with their departments, staffs, companies, organizations<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to inspire, guide, lead<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How to listen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I intentionally inserted the word <em>listen<\/em> many times in the above scenarios, as I don&#8217;t think we do enough about &#8212; or even think about &#8212; actively developing that skill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The manner in which we deliver and engage learners here could vary:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">One possible way would be to <strong>use interactive videos that pause at critical points within conversations and ask the listeners how they would respond at these points in the scenarios.<\/strong> They might have 2-3 choices per decision point. When the video continues, based upon which selection they went with, the learner could see how things panned out when they pursued that route.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Or perhaps we could host some<strong> seminars or workshops<\/strong> with students on <strong>how to use web-based collaboration tools<\/strong> (videoconferencing and\/or audio only based meetings) and\/or <strong>social media related tools.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Or perhaps such training could occur in more\u00a0<strong>face-to-face environments<\/strong> with 2 or more learners reading a scene-setting script, then pausing at critical points in the conversation for students to discuss the best possible responses<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8230;.and I&#8217;m sure there are other methods that could be employed as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But for all the talk of the importance of communications, are we doing enough to provide effective examples\/coaching here?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Some thoughts on this topic from scripture<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=james+1%3A19-20&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James 1:19-20 (NIV)<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Listening and Doing<\/em><br \/>\n19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=proverbs+21%3A23&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proverbs 21:23 (NIV)<\/a><br \/>\n23 Those who guard their mouths and their tongues\u00a0keep themselves from calamity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=proverbs+18%3A20-21&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proverbs 18:20-21 (NIV)<\/a><br \/>\n20 From the fruit of their mouth a person\u2019s stomach is filled;\u00a0with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied.\u00a021 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=proverbs+12%3A18-19&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proverbs 12:18-19 (NIV)<\/a><br \/>\n18 The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. 19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From DSC: As important as being able to effectively communicate with others is, I think we could do a better job throughout the entire learning continuum of proving more coaching in this regard.
