You\u2019ve likely heard that Google\u2019s DeepMind recently beat the world\u2019s best Go player. But in far more practical and pervasive ways, artificial intelligence (AI) is creeping into every aspect of life\u2013every screen you view, every search, every purchase, and every customer service contact.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What\u2019s happening? It\u2019s the confluence of several technologies\u2013Moore\u2019s law made storage, computing, and access devices almost free.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gettingsmart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-17-at-9.30.13-PM.png\" width=\"75% height=\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Venn diagram illustrates how deep learning is a subset of AI and how, when combined with big data, can inform enabling technologies in many sectors. For examples, to AI and big data add:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Robotics, and you have industry 4.0.<\/li>\n<li>Cameras and sensor package, and you have self-driving cars.<\/li>\n<li>Sensors and bioinformatic maps, and you have precision medicine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While there is lots of good news here\u2013diseases will be eradicated and clean energy will be produced\u2013<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>we have a problem:<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>this stuff is moving faster than civic infrastructure can handle. Innovation is outpacing public policy on all fronts.<\/strong> <\/span>The following are 10 examples of issues coming at us fast that we (in the US in particular) are not ready to deal with.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Unemployment.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Income inequality.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Privacy<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Algorithmic bias. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Access.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Machine ethics.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Weaponization.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Humanity.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Genome editing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bad AI.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC:<br \/>\n<\/em>Readers of this blog will know that I&#8217;m big on pulse-checking the pace of technological change &#8212; because it has enormous ramifications for societies throughout the globe, as well as for individuals, workforces, corporations, jobs, education, training, higher education and more. Readers of this blog will again hear me say that the pace of change has changed. We&#8217;re now on an <em><strong>exponential pace\/trajectory<\/strong> <\/em>(vs. a slow, steady, linear path).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>\u201cInnovation is outpacing public policy on all fronts.\u201d<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How true this is. Our society doesn&#8217;t know how to deal with this new pace of change.
