from kqed.org by Rachael Myrow<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ww2.kqed.org\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/06\/RS19970_HomelessStudy_Scene4-qut.jpg?fit=1455%2C875\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The burgeoning field of Virtual Reality \u2014 or VR as it is commonly known \u2014 is a vehicle for telling\u00a0stories through 360-degree visuals\u00a0and sound that put you right in the middle of the action, be it at a crowded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iXHil1TPxvA&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=6m30s\" target=\"_blank\">Syrian refugee camp<\/a>, or inside the body of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genworth.com\/lets-talk\/r70i-aging-experience.html\" target=\"_blank\">85-year-old with a bad hip and cataracts<\/a>. \u00a0Because of VR\u2019s\u00a0immersive properties, some people describe the medium\u00a0as \u201cthe ultimate empathy machine.\u201d But can it make people care about something as fraught and multi-faceted as homelessness?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A study in progress at Stanford\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vhil.stanford.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Virtual Human Interaction Lab<\/a> explores that question, and I strapped on an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oculus.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oculus Rift<\/a>\u00a0headset (one of the most popular devices people currently use to experience VR) to look for an answer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>A new way of\u00a0understanding homelessness<\/strong><br \/>\nThe study,\u00a0called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/vhil.stanford.edu\/projects\/2015\/empathy-at-scale\/\" target=\"_blank\">Empathy at Scale<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0puts participants in a variety of scenes designed to help them imagine the experience of being homeless themselves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stanford\u2019s virtual reality lab cultivates empathy for the homeless &#8212;
