Why aren&#8217;t we doing it?<\/strong> <\/a>&#8212; from huffingtonpost.com by Brad Phillips<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt <span style=\"color: #800000;\">(emphasis DSC):<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This week&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/blog\/2014\/08\/13\/new-commitments-improve-college-opportunity\" target=\"_blank\">White House &#8220;College Opportunity&#8221; summit<\/a> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">will focus on an overlooked area with enormous potential for student success:<strong> K-12 and higher education working together to improve college completion.<\/strong> <\/span>It sounds so simple and obvious. In fact many assume it&#8217;s already happening. After all both groups of educators share the same students, just at different points in their education careers. Why wouldn&#8217;t they share information about students and coordinate efforts to help students be successful?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The process of closely analyzing high school to college data is eye opening for both K-12 and college educators. Faculty discover that while they both may be calling a subject Algebra or English, what is taught and assigned can be very different, setting up students for a struggle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In Southern California, high school teachers and college faculty members participating in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2012\/05\/23\/32phillips.h31.html\" target=\"_blank\">English Curriculum Alignment Project (ECAP)<\/a> shared years of transcript information Examining student performance over time, educators learned that what was taught in High School English did not align with what was expected in college English.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC:<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">I&#8217;ll take that one step further and say that we need stronger continuums between K-12, higher ed, and the corporate\/business world.\u00a0 We need more efforts, conversations, mechanisms, tools, communities of practice, and platforms to collaborate with each other.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what I try to at least scratch the surface on via this <em>Learning Ecosystems<\/em> blog &#8212; i.e., touching upon areas that involve the worlds of K-12, higher ed, and the corporate\/business world.
