But this new push towards early academics and testing is taking away time for play.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8230;one study (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/discussion\/school-starting-age-the-evidence\" target=\"_blank\">in the linked item above<\/a>) found that kids who waited to start formal schooling until age 7 (when many cultures consider kids to be more responsible, etc.) had the same reading ability at age 11 as kids who began reading at age 5, and the kids who started later had better attitudes about reading and better text comprehension..<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt <span style=\"color: #800000;\">(emphasis DSC):<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"stcpDiv\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">This is a brief review of the relevant research evidence which overwhelmingly supports a later start to formal education.<\/span><\/strong> This evidence relates to the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>contribution of playful experiences<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to children\u2019s development as learners,<\/span><\/span> and the consequences of starting formal learning at the age of four to five years of age.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC:<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">First of all, here in the United States&#8230;I can&#8217;t help but think that the push for more &#8220;standardized testing&#8221; &#8212; as well as the Common Core being throttled at full-steam ahead &#8212; are like run-away trains (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/answer-sheet\/wp\/2013\/11\/30\/teacher-slams-scripted-common-core-lessons-that-must-be-taught-word-for-word\/?tid=pm_local_pop\" target=\"_blank\">here&#8217;s but one example<\/a>); that is, if you wanted to do so, they are very hard to stop.\u00a0 The unanswered question (at least for me) is, <strong>&#8220;Will they cause an enormous amount of damage when they have finally run their course?&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Secondly, as students get older, I think the word <strong>balance<\/strong> comes in to play here. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Balance in assessment. Balance in play. Balance in times to rest (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edweek.org\/tm\/articles\/2013\/11\/26\/ctq_walker.html\" target=\"_blank\">see this important posting from a teacher now teaching in Finland for his thoughts on this topic<\/a>).
