{"id":43510,"date":"2013-11-18T12:27:59","date_gmt":"2013-11-18T17:27:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=43510"},"modified":"2013-11-18T12:35:40","modified_gmt":"2013-11-18T17:35:40","slug":"reflections-on-common-core-standards-ten-colossal-errors-cody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2013\/11\/18\/reflections-on-common-core-standards-ten-colossal-errors-cody\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on &#8220;Common Core Standards: Ten Colossal Errors&#8221; [Cody]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/teachers\/living-in-dialogue\/2013\/11\/common_core_standards_ten_colo.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Common Core Standards: Ten Colossal Errors<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; a solid article from edweek.org by Anthony Cody<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpts<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> (emphasis DSC):<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Error #1:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The process<\/strong><\/span> by which the Common Core standards were developed and adopted <b><span style=\"color: #800000;\">was undemocratic. \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">At the state level in the past, the process to develop standards has been a public one, led by committees of educators and content experts, who shared their drafts, invited reviews by teachers, and encouraged teachers to try out the new standards with real children in real classrooms, considered the feedback, made alterations where necessary, and held public hearings before final adoption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0The Common Core had a very different origin.<\/span> <\/strong>When I first learned of the process to write new national standards underway in 2009, it was a challenge to figure out who was doing the writing. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u00a0I eventually learned that a &#8220;confidential&#8221; process was under way,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nga.org\/cms\/home\/news-room\/news-releases\/page_2009\/col2-content\/main-content-list\/title_common-core-state-standards-development-work-group-and-feedback-group-announced.html\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> involving 27 people on two Work Groups<\/span><\/a>, including a significant number from the testing industry. Here are the affiliations of those 27: ACT (6), the College Board (6), Achieve Inc. (8), Student Achievement Partners (2), America&#8217;s Choice (2). Only three participants were outside of these five organizations. ONLY ONE classroom teacher WAS involved &#8211; on the committee to review the math standards.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Error #2:<br \/>\nThe Common Core Standards violate what we know about how children develop and grow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Error #4:<br \/>\nThe Common Core creates a rigid set of performance expectations for every grade level, and results in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>tightly controlled<\/strong> <\/span>instructional timelines and curriculum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0<strong>At the heart of the Common Core is standardization. <\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Every student, without exception, is expected to reach the same benchmarks at every grade level. Early childhood educators know better than this. Children develop at different rates, and <strong>we do far more harm than good when we begin labeling them &#8220;behind&#8221; at an early age.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Error #6:<br \/>\nProficiency rates on the new Common Core tests have been dramatically lower &#8212; by design.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> I&#8217;m trying to give the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) a fair look\/review\/analysis.\u00a0 But the statement under #4 strikes me as being particularly relevant and extremely true:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>At the heart of the Common Core is standardization.<\/strong> \u00a0Every student, without exception, is expected to reach the same benchmarks at every grade level. Early childhood educators know better than this. I doubt they grew at exactly the same rate either. I doubt that they would grow the same ways in the exact same kind of soil.\u00a0 Some would thrive&#8230;some would die (or should I say, &#8220;fall behind?&#8221;).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Likening this to each of us as individuals, w<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">e each have different gifts, abilities, interests, and passions.\u00a0 We are not the same.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t mature at the same rates.\u00a0 And most of us don&#8217;t like to be controlled.\u00a0 School is becoming too much about control and cramming students into certain man-made molds.\u00a0 It seems to me that we are losing our way. <strong>Where&#8217;s the creativity, imagination, joy, wonder, excitement, and awe that should be inherent in learning about those things around us?<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In fact, rewind to yesterday with me and allow me to bring this very close to home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>My son shared with me that he finds Sunday afternoons to be the most stressful, depressing days and times of the week.\u00a0 Why? Because he hates school and he knows that&#8217;s coming up on Mondays.\u00a0<\/strong> Great. (And by the way, he&#8217;s a very smart young man.)\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I asked him what he would do differently if he were to design a new system.\u00a0 He replied &#8212; without hesitation &#8212; <strong>&#8220;Allow me to choose what I want to learn and who I want to learn it from.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So I then asked him, what if he could learn about how they negotiate contracts in the NFL&#8230;?\u00a0 &#8220;YES! I&#8217;D LOVE THAT!&#8221; he said enthusiastically!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">And here&#8217;s one of the very real problems that we, as a society, are facing:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">We are no longer running a 100 yard dash; or even a 440 or an 880. <strong>We are running a marathon! That is, we need LIFELONG learners!<\/strong> People who constantly learn, reinvent themselves, keep growing, keep learning.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>We DO NOT need people who HATE to learn new things or have a really bad taste in their mouths about their educational experiences.<\/strong> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So my biggest concerns with the Common Core are that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Common Core State Standards are NOT helping us get to where we need to get to; if we are to use such mechanisms, then let&#8217;s add disciplines\/areas of learning such as fine arts, music, drama, sports, woodworking, auto mechanics, and many other areas<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Common Core State Standards move us towards standardization and goes against how we were created &#8212; how we are made.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">They do not help us run the required marathons that EACH OF US now find ourselves in!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">As readers of this blog will know, I often embrace and even push change where it makes sense to do so.
