The Lord Speaks<\/strong><\/p>\n

38\u00a0Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:<\/p>\n

2\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWho is this that obscures my plans
\nwith words without knowledge?
\n3\u00a0<\/sup>Brace yourself like a man;
\nI will question you,
\nand you shall answer me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

4\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhere were you when I laid the earth\u2019s foundation?
\nTell me, if you understand.
\n5\u00a0<\/sup>Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
\nWho stretched a measuring line across it?
\n6\u00a0<\/sup>On what were its footings set,
\nor who laid its cornerstone\u2014
\n7\u00a0<\/sup>while the morning stars sang together
\nand all the angels shouted for joy?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWho shut up the sea behind doors
\nwhen it burst forth from the womb,
\n9\u00a0<\/sup>when I made the clouds its garment
\nand wrapped it in thick darkness,
\n10\u00a0<\/sup>when I fixed limits for it
\nand set its doors and bars in place,
\n11\u00a0<\/sup>when I said, \u2018This far you may come and no farther;
\nhere is where your proud waves halt\u2019?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

12\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cHave you ever given orders to the morning,
\nor shown the dawn its place,
\n13\u00a0<\/sup>that it might take the earth by the edges
\nand shake the wicked out of it?
\n14\u00a0<\/sup>The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;
\nits features stand out like those of a garment.
\n15\u00a0<\/sup>The wicked are denied their light,
\nand their upraised arm is broken.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

16\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cHave you journeyed to the springs of the sea
\nor walked in the recesses of the deep?
\n17\u00a0<\/sup>Have the gates of death been shown to you?
\nHave you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?
\n18\u00a0<\/sup>Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?
\nTell me, if you know all this.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

19\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhat is the way to the abode of light?
\nAnd where does darkness reside?
\n20\u00a0<\/sup>Can you take them to their places?
\nDo you know the paths to their dwellings?
\n21\u00a0<\/sup>Surely you know, for you were already born!
\nYou have lived so many years!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

22\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cHave you entered the storehouses of the snow
\nor seen the storehouses of the hail,
\n23\u00a0<\/sup>which I reserve for times of trouble,
\nfor days of war and battle?
\n24\u00a0<\/sup>What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,
\nor the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?
\n25\u00a0<\/sup>Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain,
\nand a path for the thunderstorm,
\n26\u00a0<\/sup>to water a land where no one lives,
\nan uninhabited desert,
\n27\u00a0<\/sup>to satisfy a desolate wasteland
\nand make it sprout with grass?
\n28\u00a0<\/sup>Does the rain have a father?
\nWho fathers the drops of dew?
\n29\u00a0<\/sup>From whose womb comes the ice?
\nWho gives birth to the frost from the heavens
\n30\u00a0<\/sup>when the waters become hard as stone,
\nwhen the surface of the deep is frozen?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

31\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cCan you bind the chains of the Pleiades?
\nCan you loosen Orion\u2019s belt?
\n32\u00a0<\/sup>Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons
\nor lead out the Bear with its cubs?
\n33\u00a0<\/sup>Do you know the laws of the heavens?
\nCan you set up God\u2019s dominion over the earth?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

34\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cCan you raise your voice to the clouds
\nand cover yourself with a flood of water?
\n35\u00a0<\/sup>Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?
\nDo they report to you, \u2018Here we are\u2019?
\n36\u00a0<\/sup>Who gives the ibis wisdom
\nor gives the rooster understanding?
\n37\u00a0<\/sup>Who has the wisdom to count the clouds?
\nWho can tip over the water jars of the heavens
\n38\u00a0<\/sup>when the dust becomes hard
\nand the clods of earth stick together?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

39\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cDo you hunt the prey for the lioness
\nand satisfy the hunger of the lions
\n40\u00a0<\/sup>when they crouch in their dens
\nor lie in wait in a thicket?
\n41\u00a0<\/sup>Who provides food for the raven
\nwhen its young cry out to God
\nand wander about for lack of food?<\/p>\n
