{"id":35600,"date":"2012-12-17T16:27:36","date_gmt":"2012-12-17T21:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=35600"},"modified":"2012-12-17T17:17:36","modified_gmt":"2012-12-17T22:17:36","slug":"reflections-on-if-you-build-it-debt-will-come","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2012\/12\/17\/reflections-on-if-you-build-it-debt-will-come\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on &#8220;If you build it, debt will come.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.quickanded.com\/2012\/12\/if-you-build-it-debt-will-come.html\">If you build it, debt will come<\/a> <\/strong>&#8212; a solid article from quickanded.com by Jeff Selingo<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em>Excerpt (<span style=\"color: #800000;\">emphasis DSC<\/span>):<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">When we read or hear stories in the news media these days about debt in higher education, we typically assume they are about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/blog\/too-big-to-fail-student-debt-hits-a-trillion\/\" target=\"_blank\">trillion dollars<\/a> in student loans held by college graduates and their families.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But last week <em>The New York Times<\/em> put the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/12\/14\/business\/colleges-debt-falls-on-students-after-construction-binges.html?ref=education&amp;_r=0&amp;pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\">spotlight<\/a> on an often ignored angle to questions of debt in higher education: the amount of money owed by colleges and universities themselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cThe pile of debt \u2014 $205 billion outstanding in 2011 at the colleges rated by Moody\u2019s \u2014 comes at a time of increasing uncertainty in academia,<\/span><\/strong>\u201d Andrew Martin of <em>The Times<\/em> wrote in a front-page story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Yet judging from the college officials quoted in <em>The Times<\/em> story, it seems they still don\u2019t get that <strong>the financial model in higher education is forever changing.<\/strong> They still seem to believe that the model that has carried them for decades will continue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The history of the United States is littered with industries that had similar hubris in the years or decade before they underwent massive change.
