Penn launches its first free online classes via Coursera<\/strong><\/a> — from the University of Pennsylvania<\/p>\n

PHILADELPHIA — This week, the University of Pennsylvania launched three free courses<\/strong><\/span> via Coursera<\/a>, an online educational platform designed to make Web-based classes available more widely.<\/p>\n

With the capacity to reach millions of people simultaneously, Coursera has a design inspired by educational research on effective learning practices and creates an interactive learning experience for the course offerings.<\/p>\n

So far, more than 50,000 people from around the world have enrolled in these three online courses,<\/strong><\/span> all stemming from Penn\u2019s Perelman School of Medicine<\/a>:<\/p>\n

  1. Fundamentals of Pharmacology<\/strong><\/a> with Emma Meagher<\/a>, an attending physician in preventive cardiology at Penn Medicine and the director of Penn\u2019s four-year pharmacology curriculum.<\/li>\n
  2. Vaccines<\/a> <\/strong>with Paul Offit<\/a>, a professor of pediatrics in the Perelman School and the director of the Vaccine Education Center<\/a> at the Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia<\/a>, who has made it his life\u2019s work to educate both the medical profession and the public on the value of vaccinations.<\/li>\n
  3. Health Policy and the Affordable Care Act<\/strong><\/a> with Ezekiel Emanuel<\/a>, the vice provost for global initiatives at Penn<\/a> and the chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy<\/a>.\u00a0 He is also a Penn Integrates Knowledge professor<\/a> in the Perelman School<\/a> and the Wharton School<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
