For many privates, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2012\/news\/2012\/02\/15\/giving-colleges-grew-82-percent-2011\">other revenue sources<\/a>, including endowment returns and private giving, are back to where they were before the recession. And almost half the presidents of private doctoral universities <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2012\/news\/survey\/concerns-about-sports-backing-obama-survey-presidents\">surveyed recently by <em>Inside Higher Ed<\/em><\/a> said their institutions could make additional spending cuts without hurting quality, meaning there is little imperative for increases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">For this reason, the presidents of several private institutions have taken some measures to control costs. \u201cSomewhere out there is a line, on the other side of which we become unaffordable. We haven\u2019t crossed it yet, but we know we\u2019re getting closer to it,\u201d McCardell said. As of July 1, newly enrolled students are required to have a high school diploma or GED in order to receive federal financial aid.
