{"id":27792,"date":"2012-03-16T08:07:34","date_gmt":"2012-03-16T12:07:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=27792"},"modified":"2012-03-21T11:35:49","modified_gmt":"2012-03-21T15:35:49","slug":"blowing-the-dust-off-the-bible-the-word-or-lack-thereof-affects-hearts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2012\/03\/16\/blowing-the-dust-off-the-bible-the-word-or-lack-thereof-affects-hearts\/","title":{"rendered":"Blowing the dust off the Bible: The Word &#8212; or lack thereof &#8212; affects hearts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> I couldn&#8217;t help but reflect again on the state of our hearts here in the United States when I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/14\/opinion\/why-i-am-leaving-goldman-sachs.html?pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Smith&#8217;s Op-Ed in the New York Times entitled, &#8220;Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs&#8221;<\/a>. It&#8217;s a depressing accounting of the rampant greed on Wall Street, with a disregard for deeper qualities and a true attention to meeting a customer&#8217;s\/client&#8217;s needs and goals. It speaks to employees not giving a damn about clients, but only looking to make as much money as possible. (It&#8217;s fine to make a living, but how about sincerely trying to make a contribution to society at the same time?)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <em>Some excerpts from Smith&#8217;s article:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And I can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To put the problem in the simplest terms, the interests of the client continue to be sidelined in the way the firm operates and thinks about making money. Goldman Sachs is one of the world\u2019s largest and most important investment banks and it is too integral to global finance to continue to act this way. The firm has veered so far from the place I joined right out of college that I can no longer in good conscience say that I identify with what it stands for.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What are three quick ways to become a leader? a) Execute on the firm\u2019s \u201caxes,\u201d which is Goldman-speak for persuading your clients to invest in the stocks or other products that we are trying to get rid of because they are not seen as having a lot of potential profit. b) \u201cHunt Elephants.\u201d In English: get your clients \u2014 some of whom are sophisticated, and some of whom aren\u2019t \u2014 to trade whatever will bring the biggest profit to Goldman. Call me old-fashioned, but I don\u2019t like selling my clients a product that is wrong for them. c) Find yourself sitting in a seat where your job is to trade any illiquid, opaque product with a three-letter acronym.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I attend derivatives sales meetings where not one single minute is spent asking questions about how we can help clients. It\u2019s purely about how we can make the most possible money off of them. That&#8217;s not a misprint &#8212; that&#8217;s 55,400 jobs gone, eliminated, axed! Pfizer announced the final phase of those jobs cuts recently, which will target 16,300 jobs and save the company a purported $1 billion in 2012.
