{"id":26199,"date":"2012-01-11T16:49:57","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T21:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=26199"},"modified":"2012-01-11T16:54:01","modified_gmt":"2012-01-11T21:54:01","slug":"population-of-needy-college-students-is-exploding-de-vise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2012\/01\/11\/population-of-needy-college-students-is-exploding-de-vise\/","title":{"rendered":"Population of needy college students is exploding [de Vise]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/college-inc\/post\/population-of-needy-college-students-is-exploding\/2012\/01\/11\/gIQARRaLrP_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Population of needy college students is exploding<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; from The Washington Post by Daniel de Vise<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> (emphasis DSC)<span style=\"color: #000000;\">:<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A higher education official from Wisconsin who attended the recent Council of Independent Colleges conference in Florida made a remarkable statement during a question-and-answer session.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">There is a group of students who enter college with such dire financial need that the amount the federal government expects their families to contribute to college is effectively zero<strong>.<\/strong> In Wisconsin,<strong> that zero-pay population has grown by half in a single year: from 42,641 students in the 2008-09 academic year to 65,800 in 2009-10.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The data come from Rolf Wegenke, president of the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>and surely they mirror a national trend.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Incoming college students have grown markedly more needy since the 2008 economic downturn.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">This perfect storm that continues to amass <strong><em><\/em><em>must be addressed<\/em><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>How can all institutions of higher education &#8212; across the board &#8212; cut tuition costs by 50% or more?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>That should be the #1 question boards are asking themselves throughout 2012 until they have some ideas\/answers<\/strong> &#8212; then begin experimenting with implementing those pilots\/ideas\/potential directions.\u00a0 If not, the conversation will continue to move outside of academia and fewer people will even care what those of us inside higher ed think.\u00a0 The development of a Walmart of Education has become a sure thing in my mind &#8212; <em>it will happen.
