{"id":22240,"date":"2011-08-18T12:44:45","date_gmt":"2011-08-18T16:44:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=22240"},"modified":"2011-08-18T12:44:45","modified_gmt":"2011-08-18T16:44:45","slug":"reflections-on-greed-economy-and-education-kuhn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2011\/08\/18\/reflections-on-greed-economy-and-education-kuhn\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on &#8220;Greed, Economy, and Education&#8221; [Kuhn]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shift2future.com\/2011\/08\/greed-economy-and-education.html\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Kuhn writes a solid posting at &#8220;Greed, Economy, and Education&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div><em>\u00a0Excerpt:<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I am about 60% of the way through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Freefall-America-Markets-Sinking-Economy\/dp\/0393338959\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1313342717&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Stiglitz\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Stiglitz<\/a>.\u00a0 Joseph is a recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Studies and covers this topic very thoroughly.\u00a0 Freefall is an fascinatingly honest retelling of the 2008 great recession and an exposing of the greed and corruption that essentially caused one of the greatest transfers of wealth in recent history.\u00a0 Self-serving banks loaned money to people who couldn\u2019t afford it based on the \u201cvalue\u201d of their home growing perpetually and the government allowed it to happen.\u00a0\u00a0 Wealth has evaporated from millions of people through loss of home and job around the world \u2013 wealth has been transferred to already very rich individuals from poor and middle class people.\u00a0 The US government has borrowed at unprecedented levels (the burden is on \u201cthe people\u201d) and through bailouts given 100\u2019s of billions of dollars to banks with virtually no strings attached due to the fear that the banks are \u201ctoo big to fail\u201d.\u00a0 Banks in turn paid out huge bonus and salaries to their leadership who essentially caused the failure of the financial system, toppled the economy, and ruined millions of peoples financial future and well being.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it government\u2019s job to protect and support \u201cthe people\u201d rather than to reward greed and failure of corporate leaders?<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>From DSC:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> I remember<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calvin.edu\/~dsc8\/economics.htm\" target=\"_blank\">posting a graphic\/item on this very item back on an old website on 12\/30\/08:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.portfolio.com\/news-markets\/national-news\/portfolio\/2008\/11\/11\/The-End-of-Wall-Streets-Boom\" target=\"_blank\">A MUST READ: The End<\/a> &#8211;from Portofolio.com, by Michael Lewis<\/strong><br \/>\nNOTE: The language is not appropriate for kids.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.portfolio.com\/news-markets\/national-news\/portfolio\/2008\/11\/11\/The-End-of-Wall-Streets-Boom\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.calvin.edu\/%7Edsc8\/images\/end-wall-st-bull-collapsed-slide.jpg\" alt=\"End of Wall Street\" width=\"580\" height=\"352\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <strong>Greed<\/strong> is at the heart of this matter&#8230;and speaking of hearts, we Americans need to tend to our often cold and non-caring hearts, which also contributed greatly to the problems that we are now facing. It&#8217;s a very disturbing article; and it points out the critical need for all of us to be standing on solid moral ground. Don&#8217;t get me wrong, I <em>know<\/em> that I&#8217;m a sinner (and so is everyone else) and my sin is ever before me. But when you mess with other peoples&#8217; lives, money, and futures&#8230;you need to have your feet on some solid ground and at least <em>strive<\/em> to do the right thing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">It also points out that <em>we Americans don&#8217;t often want to hear the truth<\/em> until we <em>have<\/em> to hear the truth or until we need someone to point the finger at and blame for the issues we face. For example, how many politicians have been discarded in the past because they delivered some harsh, unpopular truth and plans of action? This same thing happened to some of the prophets of old who had to deliver some unpopular truth. Perhaps these struggles will be the 2&#215;4 onside our collectives heads to get our attention and move towards<em> caring about others.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Current update\/further reflection from DSC (8\/18\/11):<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\">When I look at this situation, I take solace in the Word that comes to us from Psalm 73:<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2073&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Psalm 73<\/a><br \/>\nA psalm of Asaph.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-15022\">1<\/sup> Surely God is good to Israel,<br \/>\nto those who are pure in heart.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-15023\">2<\/sup> But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;<br \/>\nI had nearly lost my foothold.<br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15024\">3<\/sup> For I envied the arrogant<br \/>\nwhen I saw the prosperity of the wicked.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-15025\">4<\/sup> They have no struggles;<br \/>\ntheir bodies are healthy and strong.<sup>[<a title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2073&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-15025a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup><br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15026\">5<\/sup> They are free from common human burdens;<br \/>\nthey are not plagued by human ills.<br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15027\">6<\/sup> Therefore pride is their necklace;<br \/>\nthey clothe themselves with violence.<br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15028\">7<\/sup> From their callous hearts comes iniquity<sup>[<a title=\"See footnote b\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2073&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-15028b\">b<\/a>]<\/sup>;<br \/>\ntheir evil imaginations have no limits.<br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15029\">8<\/sup> They scoff, and speak with malice;<br \/>\nwith arrogance they threaten oppression.<br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15030\">9<\/sup> Their mouths lay claim to heaven,<br \/>\nand their tongues take possession of the earth.<br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15031\">10<\/sup> Therefore their people turn to them<br \/>\nand drink up waters in abundance.<sup>[<a title=\"See footnote c\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2073&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-15031c\">c<\/a>]<\/sup><br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15032\">11<\/sup> They say, \u201cHow would God know?<br \/>\nDoes the Most High know anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-15033\">12<\/sup> This is what the wicked are like\u2014<br \/>\nalways free of care, they go on amassing wealth.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-15034\">13<\/sup> Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure<br \/>\nand have washed my hands in innocence.<br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15035\">14<\/sup> All day long I have been afflicted,<br \/>\nand every morning brings new punishments.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-15036\">15<\/sup> If I had spoken out like that,<br \/>\nI would have betrayed your children.<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><sup id=\"en-NIV-15037\">16<\/sup> When I tried to understand all this, <\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0it troubled me deeply <\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><sup id=\"en-NIV-15038\">17<\/sup> <span style=\"color: #008000;\">[until] I entered the sanctuary of God; <\/span><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0then I understood their final destiny. <\/span><\/strong><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">(emphasis DSC)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-15039\">18<\/sup> Surely you place them on slippery ground;<br \/>\nyou cast them down to ruin.<br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15040\">19<\/sup> How suddenly are they destroyed,<br \/>\ncompletely swept away by terrors!<br \/>\n<sup id=\"en-NIV-15041\">20<\/sup> They are like a dream when one awakes;<br \/>\nwhen you arise, Lord,<br \/>\nyou will despise them as fantasies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The point is&#8230;none of us should want to be someone who &#8220;has received their reward in full (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">see Matthew Chapter 6<\/span><\/a>)&#8221; and I&#8217;m indebted to an old friend of mine who, years ago,\u00a0 pointed me towards <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+6:33&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 6:33<\/a>:<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span><sup id=\"en-NIV-23316\">33<\/sup> But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Because if a person has had the best that they will ever have (in this life\/age), I wouldn&#8217;t want to be in their shoes for what takes place in their eternity.
