The publishing industry needs to develop a new paradigm for  commercially produced instructional materials or<a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationbusinessblog.com\/2010\/10\/big_textbook_publishers_dinosa.html\" target=\"_blank\"> it faces extinction.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Will they be replaced by digital learning packs of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationbusinessblog.com\/2010\/09\/getting_the_units_right_sound.html\">atomized content<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Will Professors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationbusinessblog.com\/2010\/08\/open_source_textbooks_we_do_th.html\" target=\"_blank\">self-publish <\/a>whatever materials they need?<\/li>\n<li>Will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationbusinessblog.com\/2010\/08\/scribd_new_channel_or_hightech.html\" target=\"_blank\">piracy<\/a> destroy the textbook market?<\/li>\n<li>Are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationbusinessblog.com\/2007\/10\/10_ways_to_build_instructional_1.html\" target=\"_blank\">static textbooks even relevant any more<\/a> when information is exploding at an exponential rate?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These and many more questions haunt the dreams of educational publishing professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Now, thanks to the folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nature<\/a> (a division of MacMillan) and their new<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature_education\/biology.html\" target=\"_blank\"> eTextbook Principles of Biology<\/a><em>,<\/em> I glimpse a promising path forward.  As is so often the case with  paradigm shifts once it &#8220;clicks&#8221; in your head it is so simple that you  wonder that you didn&#8217;t get it earlier.<br \/>\nBetter late than never I guess.<\/p>\n<p>The product itself is innovative but from what I can tell not  groundbreaking.  It won&#8217;t ship until September but from the description  it sounds similar to <a href=\"http:\/\/pushpoppress.com\/ourchoice\/\" target=\"_blank\">Our Choice<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/19038751\" target=\"_blank\">Roma<\/a>, excellent examples of cutting edge iPad publishing for non-fiction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New textbook paradigm &#8211; In which I get it &#8212; from The Education Business Blog by Lee Wilson Excerpt: The role of textbooks in a rapidly digitizing world is an open question.
