{"id":11470,"date":"2010-11-15T17:29:55","date_gmt":"2010-11-15T22:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=11470"},"modified":"2010-11-15T17:34:06","modified_gmt":"2010-11-15T22:34:06","slug":"again-im-reminded-of-the-need-for-teams-of-specialists-within-higher-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2010\/11\/15\/again-im-reminded-of-the-need-for-teams-of-specialists-within-higher-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Again, I&#8217;m reminded of the need for teams of specialists within higher education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"ctl00_pContentPlaceHolder_ctl05_Deck\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>From DSC:<\/strong><br \/>\nI have it that higher education has reached the point where <strong>we need <em>teams <\/em>of specialists to create and deliver the content.<\/strong> (This is probably also true for K-12 as well.) <strong><em>If we want to engage the (already developing) new type of student these days, things have become far too complex for one person to do it all anymore. <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">You don&#8217;t walk into a hospital and only see one type of doctor listed there.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">You don&#8217;t see only one person&#8217;s name who was responsible for building that spectacular new building on your campus.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The credits at the end of any major motion picture don&#8217;t show one person&#8217;s name. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The list goes on and on.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Often, for complex endeavors, we need teams of people.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">To be fair&#8230;given that we use textbooks created by publishers, I suppose that we already employ teams of people to a significant extent&#8230;but it is not enough&#8230;at least not yet<strong>.<\/strong> This point was brought home to me again while reviewing the article, <a href=\"http:\/\/campustechnology.com\/articles\/2010\/11\/12\/online-education-budgets-leadership-changes-drive-restructuring.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Online Education: Budgets, Leadership Changes Drive Restructuring<\/a> by David Nagel. David states that &#8220;the  vast majority of online program managers claimed in a recent survey that<strong> faculty resistance is a significant hindrance to the expansion of their  online education programs.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">This should not come as a surprise for several reasons (at least): <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>1)  Faculty may not have taken a course online themselves yet. They may not have personally experienced this manner of teaching and learning. They may not have seen how effective it can be (if it&#8217;s done well and properly).<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>2) Secondly, it must be very difficult to invite other people to the table or  to let others bring their chairs up to the table.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">3) Thirdly, and more of my focus here, is that learning how to teach online is a new ball game<\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8212; requiring a variety of skills and interests &#8212; of which few have all of the skills and interests involved and none have all of the necessary time required.<\/strong><\/span> Teaching an effective online course requires a great deal of time and work to understand what&#8217;s possible in that particular teaching and learning environment, and which tools to use when, and to pull together the resources needed to create effective, engaging, multimedia-based online-based materials for the first time. Heck, we instructional technologists struggle to keep up here, and it&#8217;s but one piece of the puzzle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The problem is, with this new environment, a whole new set of skills are necessary, as captured in this graphic I created a while back:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-7060\" href=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2010\/07\/12\/reflections-from-the-article-evaluating-part-time-faculty\/table-2015\/\" target=\"blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7060\" title=\"Table-2015\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Table-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel Christian -- higher ed needs to move towards the use of team-created and delivered content\" width=\"683\" height=\"474\" border=\"0\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Table-2015.jpg 683w, https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Table-2015-150x104.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>In citing why restructurings are so prevalent, the following caught my eye:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Most (59 percent) cited budget issues, while<strong> 38 percent also cited coordination of instructional resources as factors<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/download.101com.com\/CAM\/Images\/2010\/20101112campuscomputing1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Now that &#8220;coordination of instructional resources&#8221; probably covers a variety of needs, requirements, and goals. But one of those goals\/needs, at least in my mind and based upon my experience, is the need to create a team of specialists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>No longer can we expect to be able to put everything on the plate of one person.<\/strong> Because rare will that faculty member be who has the all the new prerequisite <strong>interests <\/strong>and <strong>abilities<\/strong> and <strong>software <\/strong>and <strong>hardware<\/strong>. And if they are that good, they won&#8217;t have the <strong>time <\/strong>to do it all anyway.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From DSC: I have it that higher education has reached the point where we need teams of specialists to create and deliver the content.
