Art Levine, Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, sees three major change forces: <strong>new competition, a convergence of knowledge producers, and changing demographics.<br \/>\n&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\nTo Art\u2019s list of three big change forces,<strong> add shrinking government  support, the press for more accountability, and emerging technology<\/strong>&#8230;the next few decades will be marked by a lumpy <strong>move to competency-based learning<\/strong>&#8230;<strong>instant information<\/strong> and the <strong>ability to learn anything anywhere.<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230;<strong><br \/>\nThe shift to personal digital learning is on. \u00a0Some colleges get that.\u00a0  Others will seek bailouts until they go out of business.\u00a0 Working adults  are getting smart on their own terms.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><br \/>\nTime will tell if Tom&#8217;s assertions are too harsh here, but personally, I think he&#8217;s right. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I have it that:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">There<em><strong> <\/strong>is<\/em><strong> <\/strong>a bubble in higher ed<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">There also exists a perfect storm that&#8217;s been forming for years within higher ed and the waves are cresting<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/perfect-storm.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9213\" title=\"The-Perfect-Storm-in-Higher-Ed-Thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/The-Perfect-Storm-in-Higher-Ed-Thumbnail1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"The perfect storm in higher ed -- by Daniel S. Christian\" width=\"254\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/The-Perfect-Storm-in-Higher-Ed-Thumbnail1.jpg 254w, https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/The-Perfect-Storm-in-Higher-Ed-Thumbnail1-150x108.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Institutions of higher education need to check themselves before they become the next Blockbuster<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-9531\" href=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2010\/09\/23\/well-its-happened-blockbuster-files-for-chapter-11-protection\/disruptiveimpactoftech\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9531\" title=\"DisruptiveImpactofTech\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DisruptiveImpactofTech.jpg\" alt=\"Do not underestimate the disruptive impact of technology -- June 2009\" width=\"556\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DisruptiveImpactofTech.jpg 556w, https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DisruptiveImpactofTech-150x90.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">We must not discount the disruptive powers of technology nor the trends taking place today (for a list of some of these trends, see the work of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sixteen-Trends-Profound-Impact-Future\/dp\/1931762481\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Marx<\/a>, as well as Yankelovish&#8217;s (2005) <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/FermentChange-Higher\/14934\" target=\"_blank\">Ferment and Change: Higher Education in 2015<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Innovation is not an option for those who want to survive and thrive in the future.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Specifically, I have it that we should be experimenting with:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Significantly <\/em>lowering the price of getting an education (by 50%+)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Providing greater access (worldwide)<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Offering content in as many different ways as we can afford to produce<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Seeking to provide interactive, multimedia-based content that is created by <em>teams <\/em>of specialists &#8212; for<em> anytime, anywhere, on any-device type of learning (24x7x365)<\/em> &#8212; <em>at any pace!<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;Breaking down the walls&#8221; of the physical classroom<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Pooling resources and creating consortiums<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Reflecting on what it will mean if online-based exchanges are setup to help folks develop competencies<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Working to change our cultures to be more willing to innovate and change<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Thinking about how to become more nimble as organizations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Turning more control over to individual learner and having them create the content<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Creating and implementing more cross-disciplinary assignments<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The world changed, colleges missed it &#8212; from edreformer.com by Tom Vander Ark A bunch of colleges are going out of business, only they don\u2019t know it.
