The case for an OpenAI slowdown arrived with the numbers against it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki wrote the second post, an essay called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/an-alien-mind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">An Alien Mind<\/a>. It closes on a line that reads oddly from the man who runs research at the company shipping fastest.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>\u201cCurrently I believe that no lab has solved alignment and monitoring to a sufficient degree to continue responsibly scaling at maximum speed for much longer,\u201d he wrote.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8230;<br \/>\nHe is not gentle about the stakes either. \u201cThis is a time that calls for extreme caution.
