Scott is very strong on the value of the traditional degree, but wants to help students see beyond \u201cthe major,\u201d telling them not to rely on what essentially amounts to a minority of the courses you\u2019ll take in college to find your path to passion and employment. He urges them to find a \u201cfield of study,\u201d to build in a broader range of self-directed experiences and classes to find your purpose and profession. (I love this and recommend his book.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">WhiIe I don\u2019t recommend against college,\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoneedscollegeanymore.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Who Needs College Anymore?<\/a>\u201d\u00a0points to the growing number of employers and colleges that are offering skills-based career paths, that can be achieved with shorter term programs\u2026that can be a stepladder to a degree, but don\u2019t leave you credential-less if life gets in the way. And as in Pennsylvania, it\u2019s an abrupt change from a period during which something happened that most Americans probably didn\u2019t notice: Tuition had actually been falling, when adjusted for inflation, after decades of outpacing the cost of almost everything else.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">That\u2019s among the conclusions of The Hechinger Report\u2019s update of its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuitiontracker.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tuition Tracker tool<\/strong><\/a>, which shows what students pay to go to individual colleges and universities based on their families\u2019 incomes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Considering the growing skepticism that college is \u201cthe magic ticket to the American dream,\u201d said Gillen, raising tuition, for many higher education institutions, \u201cdefinitely has the potential to be penny-wise and pound-foolish.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>But universities and colleges are confronting unprecedented problems on the funding side.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Heads Butt &#8212; from kathleendelaski.substack.com by Kathlee deLaski An actual debate at LinkedIn Headquarters on the value of the college degree Coincidentally published the same day, our books do take opposing views in parts.
