Faculty and administrators could be just as constrained by the\u00a0golden handcuffs<\/a>\u00a0of a 2% interest rate as everybody else. That makes them less likely to move for a new job, Kelchen said, especially since they\u2019re unlikely to get the type of salary increase they\u2019d need to offset more pricey mortgage payments. Plus, even\u00a0finding an affordable house<\/a> in the first place could be a challenge right now.<\/p>\n

All of this contributes to what Kelchen called a \u201chunker-down mindset\u201d in higher ed.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if the institutions are giving out pay raises, the pay raises aren’t matching housing costs,\u201d Kelchen said. \u201cAnd then that creates a pressure to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n

While that might seem like a \u201cfirst-world problem,\u201d it also affects college and university staff members, Kelchen told me. Often the only way for staff members to make more money is to move universities \u2014 there aren\u2019t the same in-house growth opportunities as there are for faculty.
