These facilities are privately owned and run for profit.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Companies like CoreCivic and GEO Group receive\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2022\/06\/private-prison-industry-shifts-focus-to-immigrant-detention-centers-funding-immigration-hawks\/\">government funding<\/a>\u00a0based on the number of people they detain, which is why they\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/theappeal.org\/geo-group-earnings-mass-deportations\/\">lobby<\/a>\u00a0for stricter immigration policies. It\u2019s a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/investors.geogroup.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/geo-group-awarded-15-year-contract-us-immigration-and-customs\">lucrative business<\/a>: CoreCivic made over\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.corecivic.com\/static-files\/d3f1752e-87b8-4256-99ed-f3803c5817f8\">$560m<\/a>\u00a0from Ice contracts in a single year. He has issued patently unconstitutional\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trumps-orders-targeting-law-firms-raise-constitutional-concerns-experts-say-2025-03-08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">orders<\/a>\u00a0targeting law firms and lawyers who represent clients he views as enemies. He has\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/05\/us\/trump-retribution-justice.html\">vowed to weaponize<\/a>\u00a0the Department of Justice against his political opponents.
