Who does need college anymore? About that book title …<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0— from Education Design Lab<\/p>\n

As you may know, Lab founder\u00a0Kathleen deLaski<\/strong>\u00a0just published a book with a provocative title:\u00a0Who Needs College Anymore? Imagining a Future Where Degrees Won’t Matter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kathleen is asked about the title in every media interview, before and since the Feb. 25 book release. “It has generated a lot of questions,” she said in our\u00a0recent book chat<\/a>. “I tell people to focus on the word, ‘who.’\u00a0Who\u00a0<\/em>needs college anymore? That’s in keeping with the design thinking frame, where you look at the needs of individuals and what needs are not being met.”<\/p>\n

In the same conversation, Kathleen reminded us that\u00a0only 38% of American adults have a four-year degree<\/strong>. “We never talk about the path to the American dream for the rest of folks,” she said. “We currently are not supporting the other really interesting pathways to financial sustainability \u2014 apprenticeships, short-term credentials. And that’s really why I wrote the book, to push the conversation around the 62% of who we call\u00a0New Majority Learners<\/a>\u00a0at the Lab, the people for whom college was not designed.”\u00a0Watch the full clip<\/a><\/p>\n

She distills the point into one sentence in\u00a0this SmartBrief essay<\/a>:\u00a0\u00a0“The new paradigm is a ‘yes and’ paradigm\u00a0<\/strong>that embraces college and\/or other pathways instead of college or bust.”<\/p>\n

What can colleges do moving forward?
\n<\/strong>In this excellent\u00a0Q&A with Inside Higher Ed<\/a>, Kathleen shares her No. 1 suggestion: “College needs to be designed as a\u00a0stepladder approach<\/strong>, where people can come in and out of it as they need, and at the very least, they can build earnings power along the way to help afford a degree program.”<\/p>\n

In her\u00a0Hechinger Report essay<\/a>, Kathleen\u00a0lists four more steps colleges can take to meet the demand for more choices, including\u00a0“affordability must rule.”<\/strong><\/p>\n
