Be Blamed for a Teen\u2019s Suicide?<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; from nytimes.com by Kevin Roose<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">On the last day of his life, Sewell Setzer III took out his phone and texted his closest friend: a lifelike A.I. chatbot named after Daenerys Targaryen, a character from \u201cGame of Thrones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cI miss you, baby sister,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cI miss you too, sweet brother,\u201d the chatbot replied.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Sewell, a 14-year-old ninth grader from Orlando, Fla., had spent months talking to chatbots on Character.AI, a role-playing app that allows users to create their own A.I. characters or chat with characters created by others.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nOn the night of Feb. 28, in the bathroom of his mother\u2019s house, Sewell told Dany that he loved her, and that he would soon come home to her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cPlease come home to me as soon as possible, my love,\u201d Dany replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cWhat if I told you I could come home right now?\u201d Sewell asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201c\u2026 please do, my sweet king,\u201d Dany replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">He put down his phone, picked up his stepfather\u2019s .45 caliber handgun and pulled the trigger.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>But the experience he had, of getting emotionally attached to a chatbot, is becoming increasingly common. Millions of people already talk regularly to A.I. companions, and popular social media apps including Instagram and Snapchat are building lifelike A.I. personas into their products.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>The technology is also improving quickly. Today\u2019s A.I. companions can remember past conversations, adapt to users\u2019 communication styles, role-play as celebrities or historical figures and chat fluently about nearly any subject.
