(In Norway, all education for children 5 and under is referred to as \u201cbarnehagen,\u201d the local translation of \u201ckindergarten.\u201d) To an American, the Norwegian philosophy, both in policy and in practice, could feel alien. The government\u2019s view isn\u2019t that child care is a place to put children so parents can work, or even to prepare children for the rigors of elementary school. <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">It\u2019s about protecting childhood.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cA really important pillar of Norway\u2019s early ed philosophy is the value of childhood in itself,\u201d said Henrik D.
