This is hard to understand.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt <span style=\"color: #800000;\">(emphasis DSC):<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Last week, Matt Barnum reported in Chalkbeat that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is laying off dozens of staff members and\u00a0pivoting away from the personalized learning platform\u00a0they have funded since 2015 with somewhere near $100M.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nI have tried to illustrate as often as my subscribers will tolerate that students don\u2019t particularly enjoy learning alone with laptops within social spaces like classrooms.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>That learning fails to answer their questions about their social identity.\u00a0It contributes to their feelings of alienation and disbelonging.<\/strong><\/span> I find this case easy to make but hard to prove. Maybe we just haven\u2019t done personalized learning\u00a0<em>right?<\/em>\u00a0Maybe Summit just needed to include\u00a0<em>generative AI chatbots<\/em>\u00a0in their platform?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">What is far easier to prove, or rather to\u00a0<em>disprove<\/em>, is the idea that \u201cwhole class instruction\u00a0<em>must<\/em>\u00a0feel impersonal to students,\u201d that \u201cwhole class instruction\u00a0<em>must necessarily<\/em>\u00a0fail to meet the needs of individual students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">I appreciate Dan&#8217;s comments here <em>(as highlighted above)<\/em> as they are helpful in my thoughts regarding the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/thelivingclassroom\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learning from the Living [Class] Room<\/a><\/strong> vision. They seem to be echoed here by Jeppe Klitgaard Stricker when he says:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Personalized learning paths can be great, but they also entail a potential abolishment or unintended dissolution of learning communities and belonging.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Perhaps this powerful, global, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-backed, next-generation, lifelong learning platform of the future will be more focused on <em>postsecondary<\/em> students and experiences &#8212; but not so much for the K12 learning ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But the school systems I&#8217;ve seen here in Michigan (USA) represent systems that address a majority of the class only. These one-size-fits-all systems don&#8217;t work for many students who need extra help and\/or who are gifted students. The trains move fast. Good luck if you can&#8217;t keep up with the pace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But if K-12&#8217;ers are involved in a future learning platform, the platform needs to address what Dan&#8217;s saying. It must address students questions about their social identity and not contribute to their feelings of alienation and disbelonging.
