What Can We Do About It?<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; from edweek.org by Caitlynn Peetz<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The status of the teaching profession is at its lowest in five decades, new research suggests, which its authors say is \u201ccause for national concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In\u00a0<a class=\"a-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edworkingpapers.com\/ai22-679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a new paper published Tuesday<\/a>, researchers at Brown University and the University at Albany compiled and analyzed decades\u2019 worth of national data from more than a dozen sources about factors like teachers\u2019 morale, the perceived prestige of the profession, and interest in entering the field, to create an annual profile of the profession between 1970 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">What they found is sobering. It suggests that the pandemic has only added fuel to a job that\u2019s steadily declined in prestige and attractiveness for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>\u201cWhen you look at the data that we have, it\u2019s hard to see us in a spot anywhere else other than a really critical tipping point in public education,\u201d said Matthew Kraft, an associate professor of education and economics at Brown and co-author of the report.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nReversing \u201cthe trend of top-down control over teachers\u201d and creating meaningful career pathways, including professional development and peer observation opportunities, could help restore morale, Kraft and Lyon wrote in their paper, though they did not recommend specific approaches.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Status of the Teaching Profession Is at a 50-Year Low.
