The Council of Independent Colleges\u2019 fastest-growing initiative is the Online Course Sharing Consortium, which allows small colleges to offer certain courses to students at other institutions. Currently, there are 2,200 enrollments among almost 6,000 courses on the platform.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe higher-ed business model is broken,\u201d says Jeffrey R. Docking, who has been president of Adrian College for 16 years. \u201cBut where it\u2019s most broken \u2014 and the first ones that are going to walk the plank \u2014 are the small private institutions. The numbers just don\u2019t work.\u201d Combining some backroom functions or arranging consortial purchases is just \u201cdabbling around the edges\u201d \u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">and won\u2019t get close to driving down the cost of tuition by 30 to 40 percent over the next several years, which is what Docking believes is necessary.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Docking&#8217;s last (<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>highlighted<\/em><\/span>) sentence above reminds me of what I predicted back in 2008 when I was working for Calvin College.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The vision I relayed in 2008 continues to come to fruition &#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/danielschristian.com\/thelivingclassroom\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> albeit I&#8217;ve since changed the name of the vision.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44436\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/TheWalmartOfEducationIsHere-DSC.jpg\" alt=\"Back in 2008 I predicted that we would see the days of tuition being cut by 50% or more\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/TheWalmartOfEducationIsHere-DSC.jpg 872w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/TheWalmartOfEducationIsHere-DSC-150x89.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 872px) 100vw, 872px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC (cont&#8217;d):<\/em><strong><br \/>\nI was trying to bring down the cost of higher education &#8212; which we did with Calvin Online for 4-5 years&#8230;before the administration,\u00a0 faculty members, and even the leadership within our IT and HR Departments let Calvin Online die on the vine. This was a costly mistake for Calvin, as they later became a university &#8212; thus <em>requiring<\/em> that they get into more online-based learning in order to address the adult learner. Had they supported getting the online-based learning plane off the runway, they could have dovetailed nicely into becoming a university. But instead, they dissed the biggest thing to happen within education in the last 500 years (since the invention of the printing press).\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Which brings me to one last excerpted quote here:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>\u201cFor so many years,\u201d Docking says, \u201call of these really smart people in Silicon Valley, at the University of Phoenix, at for-profits were saying, We\u2019re going to do it better\u201d \u2014 and they came around with their \u201csolutions\u201d in the form of MOOCs, or massive open online courses, and other scaling plans.
