{"id":76746,"date":"2021-09-20T15:04:05","date_gmt":"2021-09-20T19:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=76746"},"modified":"2021-09-20T16:30:39","modified_gmt":"2021-09-20T20:30:39","slug":"reflections-on-is-accreditation-a-barrier-to-innovation-asugsv-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2021\/09\/20\/reflections-on-is-accreditation-a-barrier-to-innovation-asugsv-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on &#8220;Is Accreditation a Barrier to Innovation? | ASU+GSV 2021&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cu7YtS9bBPs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">My answer to the question &#8220;Is Accreditation a Barrier to Innovation?&#8221; would be &#8220;Yes, it is.&#8221; But admittedly, maybe that&#8217;s because I work for a law school these days&#8230;and in the legal education realm (as controlled by the American Bar Association), there is YET to be a fully 100% online-based Juris Doctor (JD) degree that I&#8217;m aware of. There are some schools that have applied for &#8220;variances,&#8221; but we&#8217;re talking 20+ years after institutions of higher education introduced online-based learning! Those programs who have applied for variances are under an incredible amount of scrutiny by the American Bar Association, that&#8217;s for sure. So the legal realm is NOT doing well with innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But in regards to other areas of higher ed and its accrediting bodies&#8230;I&#8217;m sorry, but you can&#8217;t tell me that the run-up in the price of higher education over the last several decades had nothing to do with HE&#8217;s accrediting bodies and either their support of &#8212; or their lack of support of &#8212; those organizations who were trying to introduce something new. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But along these lines, I&#8217;d like to hear from folks like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/burck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burck Smith from Straighterline<\/a> on his perspectives and his company&#8217;s experiences with the various accrediting bodies that Straighterline has had to deal with. His insights here would carry a significant impact\/weight for me.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Or perhaps someone like James DeVaney from University of Michingan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UMichiganAI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Academic Innovation<\/a> or\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joshmkim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joshua Kim<\/a> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">who writes about higher education and edtech\/online learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Or folks like Mary Grush or Rhea Kelly at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/campustechnology.com\/Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CampusTechnology.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Surveying organizations who could speak for a massive group of students\/learners\/employees<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8230;and\/or other folks who are either trying to innovate within the existing systems, have heard from both sides of the table here, and\/or have tried and failed to innovate within the existing structures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">We&#8217;ll see if institutions of traditional higher education can reinvent themselves in order to stay relevant and survive (especially colleges and universities&#8230;not so much the community colleges).
