10\u00a0<\/span>Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.<\/span>\u00a02\u00a0<\/sup>When Jeroboam\u00a0son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled\u00a0from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt.<\/span>\u00a03\u00a0<\/sup>So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel\u00a0went to Rehoboam and said to him:<\/span>\u00a04\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYour father put a heavy yoke on us,\u00a0but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

5\u00a0<\/sup>Rehoboam answered, \u201cCome back to me in three days.\u201d So the people went away.<\/span><\/p>\n

6\u00a0<\/sup>Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders\u00a0who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. \u201cHow would you advise me to answer these people?\u201d he asked.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

7\u00a0<\/sup>They replied, \u201cIf you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer,\u00a0they will always be your servants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>But Rehoboam rejected\u00a0the advice the elders\u00a0gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>9\u00a0<\/sup>He asked them, \u201cWhat is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, \u2018Lighten the yoke your father put on us\u2019?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

10\u00a0<\/sup>The young men who had grown up with him replied, \u201cThe people have said to you, \u2018Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.\u2019 Now tell them, \u2018My little finger is thicker than my father\u2019s waist.<\/span>\u00a011\u00a0<\/sup>My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

12\u00a0Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, \u201cCome back to me in three days.\u201d\u00a013\u00a0The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders,\u00a014\u00a0he followed the advice of the young men and said, \u201cMy father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

From DSC:<\/span><\/em>
\nThe new, younger king didn’t listen to the older, more experienced people (i.e., the elders) who had worked with King Solomon (a king who reigned over a united Israel for 40 years<\/em>…and a person whom the Bible says was the wisest king of all time<\/em>). Instead the younger king sought the counsel of his younger peers and went with that advice. This led to Rehoboam’s downfall — at least in terms of keeping a strong, united Israel. He was only a king of a much smaller kingdom due to his decision and actions.<\/span><\/p>\n

What might the youth of today learn from this? How might entrepreneurs learn from this? What might companies like Google, Facebook, and others learn from this? How might this impact how we go about developing the culture of a company<\/strong>? What’s valued and what’s not valued?<\/span><\/p>\n

There are probably different lessons one can learn from 2 Chronicles Chapter 10. But here’s one example that comes to my mind…<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
